So, a couple of quick, and probably silly questions. I am about to buy a use bike, and was wondering on how much wiggle room dealers have. How much is it worth trying to negotiate a price to save a little money here and there?

Its probably going to be a 15 or 16 plate Tracer 900, so fairly new etc

Any tips of dealership negotiations that you have offer?

There are a few around, but none locally, so its probably going to be a case of buying and getting it delivered, or a road trip to pick it up. so Unlikely I will be viewing it before I buy, so will be going on the word of the dealer that it is in as new condition like they say it is.

Any advice would be appreciated it Smile

The Tracer is really popular at the moment and we are at the height of the 'season'. You are more likely to get a better deal on a new one.

I've found you're more likely to get some extra tat thrown in than money off.

Good choice.

Honestly, just take a poke on eBay and find a nice low miles private example, haggle in person/show a busted testicle and get some dollar off.

Dealers are a bit gash at dropping prices. I fought for a good 40 minutes to get my GSXR under 6.7k from 6999 Laughing Could just get one from private for 6500 but I really needed to help my credit history.

I agree. Dealers are making all their money on used bikes. When I was sniffing around a few years back, not a one of them was interested in discussing the price on their used stock. That's what we want, this is what we're offering for yours (all the same, straight out of The Book): you want finance on the difference, mate?

Some of the bikes I knew for a fact had been sitting around unsold for months. No interest in shifting them, quite happy to watch me walk out the door.

New bikes though, franchised dealers have a strong incentive to flog them to hit sales targets.

If you want to own outright, one thing you could try is taking whatever usurious finance deal they offer in order to get a lower price (but high monthly payments), then immediately pay it all off.

I always got the impression (main) dealers weren't interested in people with actual money (they want finance). They can afford to sit on bikes so won't drop much, private sellers normally want the vehicle gone. Dealer margins are huge, a mate got £350 for his CBR125 with a blown exhaust, they stuck a new pipe on and sold it for 2k (he paid £1500 for it).

I agree with most of above posts, go to a dealer for a brand new bike instead and ask for extras/kit/good finance, especially if your only wanting to buy a 12-18month old machine that will only be £££'s cheaper than new probably.

Also sod breaking a ball or getting a headache to drop 200quid in messy haggling to buy the bike you want. If I like it that much and want it I'll buy, but that's nearly never at a dealer.

If it's older used bikes then I'd look for private sales every time
unless it's a hard to find bike and you know a dealer has one in stock. I'd only court a dealer and try to negotiate if it was a rare 20-30year old bike they had in great condition and I really wanted it that much I knew I'd be buying it as I wouldn't find another anytime soon.

And if I wanted a rough fixer upper or rebuild project, then I'd look at eBay, free ads and local papers, as you don't want to pay much for anything your going to strip every bit off and recondition/replace.

Also the thing about dealers being very happy to sit on old bikes well that's good business. If you had say a 1987 VFR 750 in your shop, it's only going to go up in value every year. It could earn you money just sitting there.

Dealer margins need to be huge or sell a lot of stock. Presuming your mates bike went for 2k minus the £350 and say minus another £100 for the zorst that means the dealer made £1550 on that bike (Presuming he didn't service it, valet it etc. as well. More costs). How far would £1550 go towards shop rent, business rates and overheads like power, and that's before wages come into the equation.

And the dealer has to pay 20% VAT on that £1550 as well.

...and? Very Happy They're not charities, I personally wouldn't bother getting less and paying more for vehicles from a dealer. They obviously serve a purpose for new vehicles as you aren't exactly going to unload it off the boat yourself, but for used vehicles I can't say I've ever seen a vehicle worth considering (they've been that much more expensive). Good for window shopping though.

If your mate had a bike worth in region of £1500 to £2000 (top book) why didn't he fix the exhaust and sell it for what it was worth, rather than 'give it away' for £350?

Partly because he was buying on a credit card but mainly cos he's an idiot Very Happy He also paid 3k for a cbr600f so the dealer must have been laughing his head off.

To be fair £611 is a better we buy anything offer than I'd have expected for an assumed average condition 17yr old sportsbike.

ZX7R's are old, are rare and though great looking a mint one is, it's not yet a huge nostalgia bike or a cult bike or appreciating classic quite yet. In 2008 ZX6R's of the G-A series were fetching £1500-2000 at best.

Unless my out of touch with millennial bike prices, means everything even that old has shot up in value because theres not enough second hand bikes left in the uk, means everything is overpriced or inflated, then I'd expect to pick up a very tidy ZX7R for under £1500, a tatty one for a grand tops.

If your in a mega rush to get shot and don't want time wasters, then a no quibble 611 notes in your hand is worth having to some people, and if you can save more than £7-800 at the other end by not having a p/x your still out on top.
