Hi all. Got this cbr 600 (steel frame). Its still restricted but ive put in about 150 miles since yesterday lunch. Goes quite well but just isnt smooth enough. No where near.

My main quibble though is the gearbox. Now i know honda gearboxes are meant to be heavy. But sweet jesus. Im hoping its just cold, cos its been serviced very recently so oil wont be old, and ive tried many ways of changing gears (blipping, low revs, higher revs, stamping it, tapping it etc) and it seems to do it at random. Sometimes it is mererly content going down like a train crash, grinding metal flinchingly loud. Then theres the false neutral it drops into between first and second for no apparent reason. But the best one is when you go to drop down from second to first, and it just bounces along on top of the gear grinding but not going in at all, then eventually crunches into neutral. Which is a tad unhelpful.

Now the clutch seems to be beautiful, so anyone else had problems like this on their honda? Any remedies/things to try?

I have a CBR 1o00fm, which is similar age/technology, and it doesn't do any of those things!

It gives a bit of a heavy CLONK as it goes into first, and if I hook my toe under it and don't release it fully then it doesn't upshift, but that is user error, and on occasion I have found real nuetral on the change up from 1st to 2nd, if I'm not positive enough with the change, but again its user error.

......No I think you have a problem Crying or Very sad

Your Jap bike is acting like an old english one!! youve got a problem. Sounds like your clutch to me, but if you say thats fine id be suspecting the selection mechanism as mentioned.

Sounds like you engine is gone, i have one for sale Wink

When i first got my hooner (same engine just different head and carbs), used to clunk into every gear, after a while you get smoother at doing it. Could just be because its a new bike to you

Mine needs a "shove" when going for 1 -> 2, particularly at high rpm, otherwise it likes to find neutral. I tend to do clutchless in that situation and it's 100%

And vice versa, you can get a false neural, (or indeed a neutral) when going down from 2 to 1 just normally. You can get around this by letting the clutch out to bite slightly when clicking down and it'll "force" the 1st gear in.

Both I don't regard these as a problem, just an old box and it is it's "characteristics". The rest of the box is 100% . It's slightly clunky sometimes, but there's nothing wrong with that, just the way some Hondas are, and it's a 92, hehe.

However I don't think you should be getting those crunching noises. Definitely shouldn't have those.

Check the clutch adjustment and take it from there. Perhaps let someone else ride it. Smoto bob had that bike and knows it well. Thumbs Up

I'm doubtful if this is your prob, but I had a few probs when I first got the vfr. It was down to holding my foot against the gear lever after releasing the clutch. I was told by the garage to shift then move my foot away quickly. This worked for me. But it does sound like yours is more serious. Good Luck!

The hornet box is similar, you need to be quite forcefull when changeing between 1st and 2nd. I've had the gear crunching noise from my box too, useally when i try to change down to second whne i'm already in 2nd. If in doubt ask someone who has ridden a similar bike to take it out for a run.

I always give the bike a little rev before i clutch down, makes it go in a lot smoother.
