Hi, new member here, I'm currently having a starting issue with my er6, 2007. Turn the key and the dash lights up, but the neutral light is dim or non existant even though it's in neutral. Press start button, nothing. However if I kick the side stand up and pull in the clutch I can here the fuel pump and clicking noise when I press the starter. It was running fine just 2 hours previously. Battery is brand spanking new. Anyone got any theories they would be most welcome.

Why did you replace it?

I'll assume because the previous one died, but why did it die? Did you check the voltage across it while the bike was running, or look for a drain with the ignition off?

On that, do you have an alarm fitted?

Old battery was kaput because it was old and would not hold charge. Bike has had a recent engine rebuild and was running sweet as a nut, no alarm fitted so no drain from there.

New battery is either not the correct battery for the bike, knackered before you installed it, or installed incorrectly.

The above assumes nothing else has been touched since it was running sweet as a nut.

Take it off / test it / test bike with another definitely working battery / refit / ride.

Sounds like a battery or charging system problem.

You'll need to get your multi meter out and find some readings.

Will it jump / bump start?

If it was a honda, I'd be guessing rec/reg.

Battery has been on bike a couple of weeks and had no problems in that time. The battery is the correct one for the bike and it has been installed correctly. Rode bike to work last night, everything fine, came back to it a couple of hours later she would not start. Got fuel pump prime, dash lights up and all lights, but she won't even attempt to turn over. I will get the meter out later and check the battery.

Then I agree with charging problem 👍

I don't think I could bump start a 650 parallel twin, lol. When hubby gets back, we will get the meter on it. I was thinking it might be a loose connection somewhere, couldn't do too much last night as too dark.

I'll suggest charging problem to hubby, he's a vehicle tech and an electrician. We couldn't really check much last night as it was getting late and didn't want to wake the neighbours.

Shocked
Have you two had another row then? Or just work opposite shifts? Trying to fathom why you're looking further
than the end of your nose for an answer to this? You appear to already have everything you need to get to the
bottom of this. Or is he a crappy fitter/electrician?

Oh look a rude LITTLE man. He hasn't had a chance to look at it properly yet as he works all day. Shame you could not be as helpful as the other posters above. If you can't say anything nice or constuctive, don't say anything at all!

Actually I agree with him. It' should be the work of minutes for a fitter /electrician to look at this problem.

We all work all day but I'd still have that diagnosed in virtually ten minutes with my multimeter and I'm an accountant....

Interesting. Why would releasing the other other two safety switches (side stand and clutch) change the story? Is there a clue there?

Have you checked the fuses?

If the clutch./stand switches are triggering the pump but the solenoid (technical term, ask hubby what it means) is clicking, you're back to a flat battery, which could be caused by the charging system being fucked, or knackered starter.

Hubby can explain how you tell which of those is the problem.

You do know that when hubby says 'I'm working late' during the world Cup he's actually in the pub?

Personally, I'd have fixed it and then gone to the pub, but we can't all be perfect.

To be fair, a new battery does quite often indicates that a bad charging circuit mullered the old one.

Hubby has checked that you're getting 14.6V or thereabouts across the battery terminals with the engine running, right?
