Tank slapper

This morning I experienced my first tank slapper.

I had just left the house took my hands of the bars for a second an the front wheel shook like Micheal J Fox.

it was still happening all the way to work to.

Could it be a balance weight has flew off or something?

Could be a lot of things. Geometry, suspension joint play, headstock bearings, brake binding, warped disc...etc..

Are the tyre pressures OK?

Checked front wheel (with bike on center stand), doesnt seem to be any play in wheel or binding brakes at all

Hold front brake an try to rock the bike an cant feel any clunks etc.

Checked pressure, it was at 47psi!? so dropped that back down to 42psi but problem still there

Paddy - yeah I have a top box on, with a small chain etc in - reckon it could be that?

What speed, acceleration?

I was getting instability above 110. Forks needed a service - cured it, but can not explain why.

First time it happened I was going maybe 20 - 30mph

Both pressures have been checked an are at 42psi

Messed about with the front end last night an steering feels smooth with no resistance at any point from left - right etc.

brakes arnt dragging

One thing I did notice is that on the front I have a weight on one side of the rim, but not the other. On the rear wheel, weights are the same on both sides?

The bike shaking its head is usually a problem with the back end somewhere. As has been said, usually a soft tyre.

A real tank slapper goes lock to lock even when you're holding onto it, often severely enough to rip the bars out of your hands. Sounds like you have a bit of a head shake which if it isn't the tyre pressure is probably wheel bearings.

Does the top box unclip? If so, have as ride without it on, just to eliminate.
When mine's full, the front end is lighter.

As stinkwheel said though, if you're missing a weight from the wheel, there will be a little clean patch where it used to live.

Neither of the wheels are loose, are they? And nothing stuck in the tyre like a stone / nail?

42psi on the front is madness. I'd run then at 36/42 usually.

Still reckon its the top box being a twunt issue though.

Point of order...

It's not a tank slapper unless it rips the bars out of your hands. This is just a mild undulation of the steering.

I should know,. I got thrown 12 feet into the air by one.

42 F & R are what the book says...so

I'm gonna try the bike tomorrow without the box on, an will have a better look at the maybe missing weight(s)
