Hi all I am looking at an engine for my bike as a spare. I have seen one however it has damage to the sproket casing.....

Quote:
the bike's chain snapped and damaged the casing around the front sprocket (see picture). Very little damage was caused but unfortunately it was enough to make the bottom end of the engine unuseable.

Now, unusable....does this mean cannot be used EVER, or can repairs be made to the casing?

Here is a picture of the damage.

I've seen something similar on an older model R1. Guy repaired the whole section round that area.

Good as new once it was fixed. Think his front sprocket snapped off in mid-go!

Certainly doesn't look like anything load-bearing or functionally critical has gone. You could probably even glue a cover on using epoxy metal, although a metal fabricator could TIG weld something much nicer looking on there. Done properly, it could be made to look a bit flash and 'custom' for extra pose value.

Hi

Looks like it has torn off the mounts for the clutch slave cylinder. Might not be an easy repair.

All the best

Keith

What's wrong with your current engine?

Is that why he sold the bike cheap? Wink

Not really. I would expect the clutch slave cylinder would need to be mounted securely and accuratly. Get it wrong and the clutch action is likely to be nasty, or the slave cylinder will just tear itself off.

Personally I would say you need to speak to an experienced high quality alloy welder, but it would not surprise me if they say it needs an engine strip to machine the repaired section accuratly.

All the best

Keith

Right, I would be stripping it down anyway to learn what makes it tick so that wouldnt be a problem.
Thanks

Hi

It which case go for it if cheap. Do a total strip as you feel like it. Suspect a blown engine with good cases might well be fairly cheap.

All the best

Hi

No idea on RSV engine prices (suspect they are not that expensive as the frames are so easily written off), but that sounds fairly cheap.

All the best

Why not get an engine from the breakers yard. An engine is an engine, may have a different piston configuration but they all use the "same" parts.

Crappie old car engine will teach you lots. Or an older bike engine for that matter. RSV engines are expensive I presume.

That or just buy a Haynes manual and look though it.... a lot. Thumbs Up
