What would you have?
I want a 500cc two stroke twin with a good, light chassis, top quality suspension and brakes, upright riding position. Maybe a little, sleek nose-cone fairing, and expansion chambers that crackle. Make sure it has a looney-tunes power band, book me a bed in A&E, and I'll be happy ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

By the time I was through with updating that, I might as well start with something different entirely
No, I don't want to start with an old bike. I want something razor sharp, new and shiny. You know, something they don't make?
As much as I don't want a diesel bike, at least Fourte managed to grasp the thread concept ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

I thought for years about building a trellis frame for an Aprillia Mille 60 degree V twin to make it a fast naked that wasn't a Tuono. If only because the Tuono is far too tall for me. What I had in my head ended up being telepathically stolen by Ariel for their ridiculous expensive thing they produce.
https://www.arielmotor.co.uk/style/temp/aceIntro/fullSize/sportAndCars.jpg
Didn't want a V four and it's too long and heavy for my vision, but it looks pretty much exactly as I imagined it.
I also considered putting a 350 powervalve motor in something decent. For a while it was going to be a Mito, but then I saw a guy called Martin Johnson do it to an NSR250 rolling chassis. With a bunch of Banshee tuning mods you could easily get 120bhp and 120kg.
To be honest though, two strokes are just a pain. My KR1S has flipped a ring peg and has now got at least one scored barrel. I'm seriously tempted to sell it and never buy another two stroke. Every one I've had apart from my TZR has blown up or not worked in some way. I do love two strokes though, a little bit too much, so it might not be long before I end up buying something stupid like a reverse seizure or something.
Anyway, back to my point. The Street Triple R is basically what you describe without the two stroke-ness. It's light, has a bit of grunt, revs almost as much as a four, handles amazingly well, sounds epic and does everything you could need. It's upright, has a small cockpit fairing and screen and to me just represents pure motorcycling fun.
Nowadays I'd probably want a very physically small 750cc sportsbike with a narrow light engine. I expect Triumph are building one right now, considering they now have their 765 engine in Moto2 next year. ____________________ British beauty: Triumph Street Triple R; Loony stroker: KR1S; Track fun: GSXR750 L1; Commuter Missile: GSX-S1000F; Cheap project: CBR900RR FireBlade

I'm kind of wondering with modern machining techniques, materials and the latest two stroke knowledge, maybe taken from boat engine development or something, if they couldn't produce something now with lower wear rates, something a bit longer lasting? Leastways, in some areas I hear 2Ts have come some way since they stopped making road bike examples?
Also, I thought with a 500cc version, it wouldn't need to be too highly tuned to deliver lots of lovely grin factor without overly compromising reliability.

I liked my Street Triple a lot, but it lacked character in power delivery I felt. Hence me asking for a 2T. Shaft drive Enfield. But that's pretty much a BMW R27. So make it a V-Twin. But then you've got a Guzzi.
Maybe a CG350? But then you have an Enfield.
OK.
My bike, but smoother, shaft drive, capable of 100mpg at 100mph. And a trip counter. ____________________ Chances are quite high you are not in my Monkeysphere, and I don't care about you. Don't take it personally.

The only bike with a more characterful engine than a Street Triple is a Buell! |
The wonderful symphony it played, with engine, induction noise and a loud can, was where the character came from. Power delivery was flat, no kick anywhere, although I didn't feel it was underpowered.
I think I'm more in mind of a modern-day RG500, but upright.

Although I can't remember how heavy/light it felt - think it was about right. I thought twin for the simplicity over the RG though. ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

I do tend to agree with you about the street triple - even the Daytona lacks character and that's the revvier/sportier sibling.
However, it does seem to tick all the boxes, apart from the sound and midrange. |
It seemed to be about the nearest thing in 4T form, which is why I liked it on the whole, although it would benefit from a step in power at, say, 6-7k rpm.
| Quote: | So how about a FI module setup to give you a lot less power at lower and mid revs, with a big hit at the top?
You could combine that with a quiet exhaust and a speaker producing a 2 stroke sound (and maybe a fake expansion pipe to go the whole hog) |

Interesting thread. The brand new bike design bit I'll struggle with, but wanting a fun bike I'm all over that idea!
As for the Diesel bike idea, yeah I see that if it's a small lightish and laid back town centre cruiser if you will. A 15bhp single pot diesel engine will suit such a bike far better than an 11000rpm Varadero 125 lump. I also like that slow melody of a little diesel engine, it's quite chilled out.
An XSR 1000 is a great idea and better still an RD350LC lookalike as a company is now convincingly doing for the triple.
Marjay I'd actually like to try riding a Buell one day, as the capable short chassis with a non suited engine combination sounds like an interesting bike!
I'd forget modern/new two strokes and dreams of much more reliability and lifespan. When they got to 300bhp+/litre that was when two strokes would never meet these aims. Its not what they are all about either, and I agree with Blue about keeping EFI away from strokers as it's just not needed, nor is over sanitised power delivery.
I think the best closest bikes to Chicken strips criteria are the two TDR 500 specials I've seen. One has a tuned 80-90bhp big bore Banshee twin in it, and the other is an RD500 lump. The 4 stingers in a row under the tail unit do it for me!
As for making a bike that doesn't exist, well I always liked the Aprilia SVX550, and don't see why a light exotic road legal supermoto can't have a twin/triple or 4cylinder motor in it? If it's purely for a road bike for fun a Daytona 675 or R6 engine should be good, as would a tuned MT07 or ER6 engine.
Oh and I'm pretty sure these days if I was able to own a 500cc two stroke bike it really would need to be a big hard to start single that shakes your arms off if it doesn't break your ankle first. |
