Hi there

I have bourght a 1991 TDR125 italy, with the wired wheels. But i desperat needs a botom end rebuild, the previus owner ran i with a briken oil line causing major failure. The bad thing is that it seems the crank is discontinued. Con rod might stil be around.

But does any body know if the crank from the later models fits, etc form a 1997 model. The 170cc kit fit everything from 1991 to 2005, so at least the piston pin must be the same.'

cmsnl.com have the 1997 crank dead cheap, but if it does not fit it is just a waste of money.

Hope you guys can help Mr. Green

Just get it rebuilt. It will be the same crank as an early TZR125 and probably the same as later DTR125’s. The Con rods will be the same as a TDR/TZR 250 too and loads of them are still getting rebuilt.

Plenty of parts available if you look harder.

pjme are very good for crank rebuilds.
https://www.pjme.co.uk/acatalog/Crank_Shaft_Rebuilding.html

he sells all bearing and seals as well. £40 plus parts and + vat. You need to go to someone who will do a good job, some are very bad at this. Pjme are excellent.

from this https://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/model/yamaha/yamaha_tdr125r%2093.htm i presume the engine is the same as the dt125r. Ring pjme and see he sells a complete crank for £140 or so.

It should yes, those are exactly the engines I expected to use the same con rod.

You do realise you can't fit this yourself though? You need a lot of specialist tools and experience to press apart and rebuild a crank.
My engine builder has a 10 ton press for a start. Cranks are not bolted together.

Why not leave the specialist to find the correct parts?

Your mate thinks he can rebuild cranks? Best of luck.

Unless he’s a specialist, I wouldn’t bother. It needs some serious tools and equipment to do the job properly and check end float, including like I said, a bloody big press.

This is not a job for your average mechanic.

He is a mashinist, has rebuild noumurus engines and cranks, and has the tools, and has a serius pasion for bikes and engines.
And regarding the presses, i think we at work have alt least 3 that is more than up to the job.
But i'm not that confident that i will tackel it my own.
I did rebuild my SV1000 engine when i broke 2 gears in the gear box, so not totaly noob in the engine department, just could'nt figure out why the parts for a 1997 TDR125 did not fit min, as it is the year on the title. Just got notice from Yamaha and it is actualy a 1990 model, talk about sitting in the show room for a long time Wink

But i realy apriciate the help Thumbs Up

Don't think I was putting you down.

I'm a fairly competent machanic too. I raced a TZR250 for 5 years and know those engines inside out. A TZR250 is basically 2 X TDR/TZR/DTR 125 barrels.

I'm just saying that cranks are not a job for an amateur. You need serious experience and specialist tools. If your mate has done them before, fine. I just wanted to stress that this is not something I or the vast majority of mechanics could tackle, it needs a specialist engineering firm who do cranks and have the right equipment.

On some cranks, mainly car ones, the con rods are bolted together at the bottom so can be changed without splitting the crank. On these obviously the crank needs taking apart. Good luck.

to be fair for a single 2t crank you need a hand press, a feeler gauge, a copper hammer and a dti clock and V blocks....if your a machinist then this is pretty much bread and butter stuff
