I wonder if it will be applied to bikes, no doubt they'd like to but it would make leaning through corners very hazardous - probably should ban bikes then - no longer compatible with traffic flows and safety targets. |

I read somewhere the plan was that once people got used to the technology they would get rid of the manual over ride and have it active all the time.
Also with manufacturers like Volvo limiting all their cars to 112mph the writing is on the wall for total big brother control of our driving habits.
https://uk.reuters.com/article/us-autoshow-geneva-volvocars/volvo-to-limit-car-speeds-in-bid-for-zero-deaths-idUKKCN1QL11C
I really don't think this bodes well for motorcycling. I foresee BHP limits at the very least if not an aim towards a total ban of bikes. sadly, even if we leave the EU it is already stated we will implement the same rules as they do.
Bye bye riding and driving for enjoyment. ____________________ Victory Cross Country American tractor. |

You just know that insurance on non limited vehicles will get prohibitive. It's bad enough driving the work van that's limited to 65, having the fucking thing kill my speed in a 30/40/50 too will make me want to ram more people than I do already ____________________ Chances are quite high you are not in my Monkeysphere, and I don't care about you. So, when a car passes under a motorway bridge with a 30 road going over the top of of it will it momentarily
(like just about every gps nav ever) think I am on that 30 road while I am driving along the motorway and then
cut the power accordingly? Don't fancy that halfway through overtaking a Volvo. Just like lane "assist" this is all just
being groomed toward self driving cars. Wanting no part of the latter I shall resist the change with both heels dug
in and will adopt this tech when I have absolutely no other option and not a moment before. Btw, I've noticed that
on a variety of nav units over a number of years they often have the wrong speed limit for the road I'm driving on
displayed. I think the tech is still a bit sketchy tbh. Can't wait for all the clever bastards literally driving like they
are in dodgems, foot to the floor the whole time letting the system regulate their speed. Terrifying. ____________________ Currently enjoying products from Ford, Mazda and Yamaha

I don't think we need to worry yet. Autonomous vehicles WILL result in humans not being allowed to control any vehicle any more. It will take a while, but it will happen.
The European Commission has said that bikes aren't compatible with this type of speed limiter, and it might even be dangerous. THis means that they will likely end up making it harder to ride bikes over the long term. It doesn't matter too much because what young person wants to emulate Charley Boorman really?
When I were a lad, I wanted to emulate the local hooligan on his ZXR750 but I don't see that happening so much these days, especially with the license being more difficult to get and so on.
Anyway I digress. The car thing is overridable, and there will be a cottage industry building up for permanently disabling them. So until the Euro MOT comes in where we all have to have the limiter tested I think we'll keep getting away with it. Also in the short term it might result in a bit of a boost for motorcycling.
This is all not even considering Brexit, which assuming it goes ahead in ANY form will mean we don't need to follow these legal regulations. We will need to follow product and standards for export to the EU but I assume we won't have to follow the domestic legal regulations.
However, the MAIN risk to us, will be manufacturers who can't be bothered to create new models just for the UK... Although I assume it's a software change that might be quite simple, so we might be OK. ____________________ British beauty: Triumph Street Triple R; Loony stroker: KR1S; Track fun: GSXR750 L1; Commuter Missile: GSX-S1000F; Cheap project: CBR900RR FireBlade
Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another. |

Just a counter thought,
I used to be a very quick rider, I literally went one year, with never been overtaken ever.
I got more confident and ultimately faster and faster, lunchtime rides were full on as were summer evenings and weekends.
I ended up binning my bike, because I rode like a dxck, I injured my hand and my arm was 1 big scab.
Now I still go out, but I have massively slowed down, I still like the bends, but now I actually like the view and as my rides are West and North Yorkshire, I am absolutely blessed with scenery.
Maybe i'm just getting old. ____________________ I've a twin and a 4. |

I reckon this is a pretty serious and adverse development.
I found this on the BMF website (https://www.bmf.co.uk/news/show/bmf-response-intelligent-speed-assistance):
| BMF wrote: | FEMA General Secretary Dolf Willigers discussed this with European Transport Safety Council (ETSC), an advocate of ISA, and he received assurance that ETSC will not advocate a restrictive application of ISA for motorcycles because they understand it would be dangerous.
FEMA will continue to monitor the situation. |
Over a chat, an official "agreed" this with them. Call me a cynic, but following the Sadiq Khan ULEZ business, I think it's safe to say that any such assurance, so readily, vaguely and informally given, must be a lie. Not going to argue about this with anyone - I just take it as a given.
This is a big red flag. To outline the issue as I see it:
1) Yes it's especially dangerous for bikes to not be able to overtake going faster than the speed limit. This is for a whole host of reasons, e.g. because something unseen could be coming the other way, the car you're overtaking decided to speed up or cross over into the other lane to avoid a pothole, a flipping partridge in the road, etc.
2) As a minority activity, the above obvious dangers aren't obvious to the majority of people, because the majority of people don't participate in the activity and are unaware of its special requirements.
3) There is no real political leverage that can be exerted to resist this, because of a mix of a lack of numbers, a lack of a coordinated outreach/advocacy, a lack of successful and effective demonstrative tactics.
4) The technology will advance to the point where it can be imposed on bikes, electric or otherwise, and at that point it's likely to follow whatever's happened with cars.
5) Any interim period where this doesn't apply to bikes isn't going to help. This is because the company rep in a new BMW/Audi with ISA locked on is going to make it highly conspicuous when said types are now doing 70 instead of their 90 to 100 on the motorway or A-road, and they're then overtaken by a bike. The feeling "why should he be allowed to get away with it?" will come over him, and there will be an increased momentum to restrict bikes.
6) The measure can be applied in a number of ways, e.g. not restricting bikes but only allowing restricted bikes on main roads, or not restricting any bikes but have satellite monitoring of all private travel, which will flag up and send you a fine when you break a speed limit even momentarily.
7) There seems to be nobody challenging what's underlying all this, specifically the "needs vs wants" premise used as a blanket argument to cap individual freedoms in the name of nebulous and arbitrary "greater goods" that never seem subject to scientific oversight or empirical evidence, e.g. safety or the environment. It goes like this: "you don't need that bike, my children need to breathe", and this is just accepted without any discussion of the evidence for bikes' net contribution (which is miniscule) to atmospheric pollutants. In fact, some people just come right out and say, bikes are just for amusement and leisure. That may account for a vocal few, but I don't accept this. I see a lot of bikes being used by commuters on the roads, and travelling to airports, etc. Taking this position ("bikes are just toys, and nobody needs toys") incapacitates any argument to the contrary, because ultimately it amounts to saying, well bikes are OK, but my wife is right: having children and shopping at IKEA for chipboard cupboards and Dulux Magnolia is the righteous use of my Sunday afternoon.
Like I said, I'm not interested in arguing about this. This is a massive imposition on the private freedoms we (for the most part) responsibly enjoy. I know I might have expressed all this at some length, and perhaps come across as a bit forceful, but this is nothing personal. It's just an issue and a hobby that I feel about very strongly. I look forward to reading other thoughts on the matter. |

I would make the most of what we have now. Speed control, trackers, automatic speeding fines, and whatever else they can monitor is going to happen sooner rather than later.
One thing to note chaps, while you can only (officially) go at 4 mph on the canals, there are no breathalysers, speed cameras, phone bans or traffic cops so this next week I'm of on a drunken cruise of 20 miles or so. Should only take me a week with pub stops. ____________________ Victory Cross Country American tractor. |
