Good:
Brilliant fun on twisty A and B roads.

Bad:
Crap for everyday use:
takes ages to warm up,
hunched, compact riding position
expensive to run
need to be in the powerband to make progress
Insurance can be nasty compared to say a gpz500, which has similar power
Need to be kept well maintained

They are not still being made, but you can get second hand parts easily (well, I got pretty much a whole spare one in pieces, so I can Razz )

For me, the first point makes up for all the rest ... but this is only as a second bike as well as having two four-wheel style vehicles. Wouldn't choose one as an 'only' bike.

They are a 2 stroke and therefor need alot of care. If you don't look after it, except it to break completely. It is also a 2 stroke so the throttle is agressive and therefor I believe that only experienced riders should use the RS250. If you are inexperienced I would strongly suggest you do not buy it.

A lot of care being kept topped up with good quality two stroke oil and a rebuild every 10,000 miles.
(Most rebuilds are probably simpler than doing the valves on a 4 stroke!)

Are you looking for a bike to ride when you've passed your test, if you haven't already?

If you want reliable, get a bigger 4 stroke. 4 strokes usually last a hell of alot longer than a 2 stroke. Obviously if you maintain a 2 stroke really good then it will last a long time but lets face it you will probably only adjust and lube the chain and check the oil every so often. Razz

NSR's are great fun and slightly more reliable than the RS125.
Look cool to.

On the rs250 you basically need to keep the oil topped up (a light comes on to tell you) and keep with the service intervals.
The other main thing is to not thrash it from cold.

If you had a 4 stroke that made 60hp from a 250 it would be a lot less reliable.

Doing the valves on a 4 stroke is to my mind much nastier than doing the piston rings or even full piston rebuild on a 2 stroke. Never attempted the former, however.

I really dont see how people can compare an nsr to an rs? They are two completley different styles of bike? ? ? It should be down to what you want the bike for. Rolling Eyes

If you are going to pass your test, I would definitely look at a bit bigger bike.

Why do you want the bike; ie fun riding, commuting, touring, etc?

I presume you are set on a sporty-style bike?

They arn't in production anymore, and thanks to new emissions law's they won't be made again neither will anything like them Crying or Very sad

Speed & handeling are jaw dropping, as is is basically a detuned early 90's 250GP bike with lights and a numberplate.
They are very narrow so they filter well, but thats about the only good things about them when it comes to use on the public roads.
Expect 15mpg/70miles to a £12 tank and to spend nearly as much on oil as you do on fuel. They are uncomfortable for long journeys and pillions arn't a good idea.

Due to their capacity they are very cheap to insure. But i'm certain everyone on here whose ever owned a 250 will tell you to spend the extra money on a bigger 4 stroke Thumbs Up

Massive fun Thumbs Up
Big running costs Thumbs Down
Impractical Thumbs Down
Expensive when they break Thumbs Down
Break regularly compaired to 4 strokes Thumbs Down
Very sore arse Laughing Thumbs Down

RS250 2 stroke...

One word... FAST!

Mr. Green

They are 2 smokers and there for fast as fook. but the down side is that they are 2 stroke. So if you rag it, Then it will cost you.

They are lightweight too, so you can sling them round a track! Cool

The advantages of a 250cc two stroke are not Speed; if you want shear speed get a 600cc+ bike. But what they are excellent at is handling and acceleration.

Well there is a replacement due for the rs250. The RSV 450. And for those of you who say bla bla its a rumour well it isnt. It may not be a 2 stroke but Its just as small and just as quick, plus better looking and no doubt more reliable.
