Leave it in the ground until we are desperate for energy then frack away. Same with the coal.

I smells of the civil service; the sort of bullshit we all use to laugh at with Yes (Prime) Minister but now know is true.

Too cowardly to cave to the whiners directly some mandarin suggested a clever way to please everyone Sad

California suffers from tectonic movement.
One of the solutions is to drill holes near the San Andreas Fault and pump water in.
Earth quakes happen when plates cannot slide over or against each other and load builds up until it overcomes resistance and movement that could have taken place over years all happens in seconds
Fracking is much the same principle though in oil reservoirs.
I've worked on well that have been cracked and never noticed any earth quakes.
Flawed evidence and the usual pish diagram from the media.

Open cast mining in the heart of Wales for the win.

The problem with fracking is the UK just isn't big enough for substantial shale gas.
It's a much cleaner fuel to burn than Coal.
The country which has really benefited from it is the US. Huge country with large quantities of shale gas.
God knows what Americas pollution figures would be like if it hadn't cleaned up a bit with Shale.

The UK has a substantial reserve. It has been test drilled for drilling plans. They do not normally drill holes without some serious considerations. (OK they do fuck it up sometimes.)
A well might cost $100 Million and more.

I think the 0.3 on the Richter is nothing. Buses passing a house on a main road make more shakery.

I say Frack and be dammed. (The gas fields are all under England which has a bonus effect for Scotland. Our land prices will probably double when England is flatted.) Smile Just joking you overly sensitive fairies.

What makes you think you are getting any of our gas. Wee Nicola Kranky will lead you into oblivion well before that. Thumbs Up
Reserves of UK offshore shale gas may eventually exceed 1,000 trillion cubic feet, which compares to the current gas consumption in the UK of 3.5 tcf each year. Even reserves near 200 tcf will put Britain among the top tier of countries with the most reserves. 1,000 tcf would lead Britain into the same grouping as Argentina, the United States and China, which are the current top dogs in shale gas potential.
So why are they in central England drilling ?
Or am I missing something?

Germany has loads then.
Why is it producing so much pollution?

https://www.cleanenergywire.org/factsheets/coal-germany

Billions of tonnes of Brown Coal very near to the surface. (Lignite - Half wood half coal) It is very cheap to mine as the cost for mining is in moving/managing 'Over-Burden' the s4it that is sitting on or between coal and layers of coal. Over-burden is a cost as it must be dug out and then put back.
Moving 'worthless' material costs fuel and wages and time.

This big bastirt. I worked on one of these cnuts in S. Africa. It's like its own big factory plant on tracks.

https://youtu.be/kfRkNK82CxQ

Easiest method is Strip Mining. They dig out a strip, Haul it to the end of the lease how ever far it is and dump it.
Then remove the coal from the hole/trench.
Move the diggers along towards the end of the lease and dig the material off the next section of coal but this material gets 'back-filled' into the hole where they just dug out the coal from.
There will be a shortage of this back-fill material but the mine plan will incorporate 'borrowings' from any higher topography.

The mining companies can then claim that the 'improve' the land by levelling out the contours. That makes it easier for farming and building land.
Environ-mentalists say that it damages deep underground geological structures and mining companies do not know the harm they may be causing for the future of the planet.
