Just a warning. Was a nice sunny afternoon and i was riding along with my visor up when i felt something fly in. Assuming it was a stone i carried on riding but put my visor down a little. Little while later at about 65mph i noticed that it wasn't actually a stone that had gone into my helmet but a very large wasp Shocked Shocked Shocked

As you can imagine it was not a nice feeling being trapped in my helmet with a large angry stinging creature. Anyway i did a very quick emergency stop and opened my visor. By now the wasp thought it would be amusing to crawl across the top of my sunglasses... Shocked

Took the oppertunity to knock it out of my helmet.

Got away without a sting...very lucky. Just a warning to you all Exclamation

Tip: If an insect finds it's way in, open your visor fully, turn your head round as far as possible and it usually will be drawn out. Obviously you need to going at a reasonable speed for this to work, or if it has managed to find it's way into your ear or something, it aint gonna happen!

But it works for me. Thumbs Up

I had a ladybird in my helmet yesterday, not very scary i know, i just opened the visor and flicked it out anyway. They seem to get in through the air inlets on the helmet.

On my way to Matlock with a mate and suddenly I noticed he had disappeared out of my mirrors. I pulled over and waited ...... and waited..... He never appeared so I turned around to find him sitting next to his bike with his head in his hands (not literally), when he lifted it up his nose was bleeding and his eye was cut. Apparently a bird hit him in the face at around 50mph. He had some shining black eyes for a couple of weeks after.

As for me I have swallowed a few flying things while riding. Sick Sick

[I've had a wasp/bee fly into my helmet and lodge it's self into the bit under my temple. It obviously wasn't too happy with this, so stung me while trapped in there.

I've had a wasp in my helmet before and it stung me once on the cheek. Very painful as there is not alot you can do whilst driving. Also today while i was taking my sister to Chobam i had a spider crawling up the inside of my visor.

It's the same kind of principle as a water operated vacuum pump. Fluid rapidly passing a cavity/ apeture will draw whatever is in that cavity out with it, creating a vacuum in a closed cavity.

In this case, the air passing past the cavity of your visor opening draws air out of the opening, sucking whatever is loose in there with it and drawing air in through the neck opening.

Trying it with a reasonably airtight helmet skirt could be interesting, as it might manage to create a better partial vacuum; ear-popping stuff. Very Happy

I had a massive bumble bee bounce off my screen, actually made me laugh into my helmet. I saw it coming, then *dong* and it bounced off, no doubt somewhat stunned.

G's experience sounds nasty! I don't like wasps at the best of times, let alone if they're stuck in my helmet.

It only takes a split second, much the same as you should be doing before overtaking etc. Wink

Got a wasp inside my lid when I was doing my DAS, I'm very allergic to them, thankfully I was only practising U-turns and was able to get it out pretty quick.

Suffice to say I couldn't see out of my visor, it was completely steamed up from over hyper-ventilation Neutral

Shocked

I would freak out if that happened! Embarassed

I am always very careful to check my lid for 'passengers' if it has been sitting on grass. I don't do insects

You know, because of a childhood accident involving one foot and one wasps nest on the ground, I'd probably have screamed like a girl. Shocked

Very same happened to me a while ago. Thought it was a stone at first but as it came closer it was black, so I thought it must have been a bee. Scared me at the time though because it made quite a loud noise as it hit my visor.

The worst I've had so far is some really big insect hitting the open chin-vent on my Arai last summer ... and bursting. I had to ride another five miles before I could stop at a cafe for a cuppa to swill my mouth out Shocked

Insect-guts taste surprisingly sweet and sugary Laughing Embarassed Laughing
