does anyone do a city commute on a supermoto? pros/cons? recommendations? reliable?

Still waiting on a MT09 to come up in one of the two dealers close to me who will give me a good P/X on my CBR.

Saw a DRZ400 the other day on the way home and it looked pretty comfy and would be suitable for a 6ft2 20st guy main reason I'm changing to a supernaked is for comfort reasons and good on the city commute

from my searches the DRZ400 and XT660 seem to be the main japanese larger capacity supermotos

Wait for the MT. Me and the Mrs weigh about 25 stone between us and my MT is still plenty powerful two up.

one con is they're really uncomfy - okay, you're only commuting but even so - dem seats are hard as fuck, thin, and annoying

the bikes are comfy in the sense of sit to peg being really generous, plus sit up & beg bar style etc. - but this should imo be off-set against the arse discomfort (and if you're a 20 stone unit that could be quite considerable)

I think TSCG means supermoto seat. Mt09 is a sofa in comprison to drz. Xt660 has a bit more padding and is not bad. I'd look at 660 engined mt03 as well.

Personally if looking for a road based supermoto I'd probably be looking at the husky 701/KTM 690 SMC. Supermotos are superb fun in a technical road and about town.

The MT09 is more versatile though and will offer similar thrills. Great fun machines with just the right amount of bonkers.

I'm 6'3 and about 15 stone. I had a drz400 for a few years. It was modded with a yoshimura exhaust, 3x3 airbox. It was fine for doing long distances, but I still would have liked a bit more poke. That's probably just me though.

You won't be comfortable on any supermoto for more than an hour, no one is ever!

They are like trail or Enduro bikes something you could commute to work on if you had to, but they are far from ideal/comfy or usefully practical etc.

Supermoto bikes are designed for fucking about on in an antisocial way for short periods of time, or for track use. They aren't good distance cruisers or vibration free easy to ride middleweights etc.

GRRR is right, wait for a naked road bike to come up if you plan on doing any serious riding or daily commuting.

Supermotos get stolen and wreaked by hoodies too. They don't bother to sell the parts as they are usually all fucked by then.

Must be a more comfy bike then. 140miles in an evening on a KMX 200 was painful!

Also supermoto bikes are generally derived from Enduro, Motocross, or trail bikes. So it's not just about seat comfort, they are often angry snappy bikes that like throttle open or throttle closed. They often don't like constant speed bimbling along or sustained main road cruising. And they to differing extents often vibrate quite severely at times.

Theres very little thats sensible or useful in a supermoto bike depending on if your talking a light competition derived type of bike or a funky styled road bike like a Ducati Hypermotard etc?

Yup they hurt your arse lots. 100 miles is enough to make me put it away.
Bars prevent filtering lots of the time. That aggressive snappy nature can be a challenge to ride smoothly with traffic. Theft fear is massive.
Personally I'd wait for something else for commuting.

Had one for 6 weeks, done 2000 and a bit miles. It's a fine bit of kit. Needed a bike for work that was a bit more fun on my commute than a cbr500 and more comfortable than my 99 cbr 600. Cbr500 gone, duke just does everything well. (Followed manufacturer's instructions whilst running in.)
