Cleaned seized fuel cap lock, now the lock is borked... Halp

Hias having a perplexing issue...

My fuel cap lock on the er6f 2007 seized up. Over the last few months it progressively got harder to unlock the thing...

So before it was totally seized ive taken it apart to clean it up... Turned out the entire locking area was utterly filled with alu corrosion powder. like chalk...

Anyway.......

I couldnt get the tumbler out of the lock. I saw somewhere about there being spring loaded retainer on the tumbler, and i did see a brass shim that stops the lock endlessly rotating, but I couldnt put it back in with my micro screwdriver... Anyway WD40 and scrubbed as much of the corrosion away as i could... and put it back together...

But heres the real issue... The lock is now free moving. I can open it with a screw driver...

Ive not lost any parts, now its entirely possible this lock was always like this, as before now I never used anything other than the key to open it. But ummmm

2 questions.
How do i get the tumbler out to properly clean it?
And have i some how reset the tumbler and i need to re-pair it with the key some how?

By the "tumbler" do you mean the barrel? That's the thing you push your key into. Unsure how it's retained in your cap, you might find a pin or clip or nut some such thing on the far end from the key hole.

If you get the barrel out and somehow disassemble it, and you get the tumblers back in the wrong positions, the lock (probably) won't open with your key.

Perhaps your best bet, if you want a fuel tank lock that actually locks (can't see much point myself....), a £20 pattern replacement with keys might be an option.

Yes the bit the key goes into, Ive always called locks tumblers as thats where the key pins go... like an old puzzle tumbler or codex...

Anyway, i couldnt find any real retainer pin...

Why bother?

Who is going to try and syphon at max 15 litres of fuel from your tank. They have to try and open it without a key to force it anyway so it's really going to make no odds.

I would just use as is and use the key to open it.

Tbh most bike locks can be opened with a screwqdriver if you add a spanner to the nut bit.

You don't have screwdrivers that have a nut bit? You're toolkit is lacking......

Well actually you dont usually find out you had sugar put in your tank till the engine has seized!

How do people find out it can be opened with a screwdriver unless they are going around trying to find a bike that that has a petrol cap that can be opened with a screwdriver?

If they want to steal the petrol it's much easier to just cut the fuel pipe.

Well multiple ways, firstly on an injection bike its god a good chance of clogging up the injectors with syrupy mess...

If it makes it into the valves it cooks and cakes up seizing the valves, and could also seize up the pistons too...

Put sugar in some ones tank you have a very expensive repair job... complete engine rebuild scrubb down and likely will need to replace some parts.

It doesn't do that. Well, yes, the grains of sugar might clog inline filters (like sand would, not with a "syrupy mess") if the fuel pipe out of the tank is right at the bottom, or so much sugar's put in that it fills the tank to that point, but that's all. You'd only need to clean your filters and get the sugar out of the tank.

Once again, I'll ask you how many people walk around with a screwdrivers testing petrol caps to see if they can undo them and will add how many have a bag of suger in their pocket?

it'll fuck the engine quite badly. Petrol is a incredibly good solvent and sugar will disolve into it readily.

I'll leave this here. It's Honda but I suspwect kawasaki ones will be broadly similar.

The tumblers are probably corroded in the "unlocked" position and just need wiggling and spraying with WD40.

The barrel will be though, you just need to work out what's holding it in.

Found a ZX9 howto but the pics have been ruined by the photobucket of fail.

I was lucky, 350 parts and labour for a Trumpet engine sugar-ized by a lesbian I was shagging. (Sex wasn't all that good.)

Sugar turns to a hard carbon deposit it heated enough. Caramel/Toffee.
