Hey there,

As I only need my gear to last 1 hour of downpours (at which point it leaks), and dry enough to make the trip back, and can't afford gore-tex gear, I'm on the hunt for waterproofs again.
I've tried suits, doesn't work too well for me, so off to a 2 piece, but priority is trousers.

What I want to ask is if there is much of a difference between the dozens of £20-30 such as found here https://www.sportsbikeshop.co.uk/motorcycle_parts/content_cat/775
Although I'm so confused by these...so...many...options!

And the same thing, but with goretex, such as these ugly things
https://www.militarykit.com/products/british-army-mtp-goretex-waterproof-trousers?variant=20874139074618
Saw a guy with them this morning and he said they're 100% dry, another plus is the full length zip, I might use these off the bike too.

If at least they were green like these I'd go for them
https://www.militarykit.com/products/highlander-tempest-dpm-camouflage-waterproof-trousers?variant=7535470149690
But these aren't goretex so might be worse than the moto ones?

What are your experiences? I'm quite thorn Neutral

Suits are not waterproof. Dry-clean only, generally, if they're wool they will go all out of shape if you get them very wet. I prefer a 3-piece (db).

The old army stuff is good. I'm still using a pair of DPM "goretex" over trousers that I was issued in 2004 (they didn't have fancy zips then though). They are still waterproof. I have a pair of Desert DP ones issued in 07 that short of shredding the DPM ones in a crash, I suspect will still be unused when I drop dead.

Hey thanks for the quick reply, would you know if there's much of a difference between the "normal" and the fancy goretex zippy ones? They're the same price which is weird. Question

I assume you meant an oversuit. What's the matter with them, from your point of view? The Boy here has just realised that his waterproof oversuit fits into its own integral bag, which has a belt to carry it around his middle, and has gone all pleased.

I did I did...the 2 I tried I found hard to get into and out of, especially with the leather jacket (kind of locked up), and had some issues with sizing, either too short and felt like I was gonna rip it when sitting on the bike, or "tall" enough but feels like wearing a bin bag. I haven't tried them all though. I think it might be easier to get the sizing individually and put o/off individually.

Plus the option to wear just one or another, although that feels like a false argument Neutral

Can't say for sure as I never needed to replace the issued wet kit with shop bought, it's one of the few things the army got right. I'd be wary of them though at that price I suspect they are just a copy of the old crisp packets (what was issued before the good shit), which while very waterproof used to make you sweat your balls off. Packed down proper tiny though.

The army ones seem cheap because they are sold off surplus (grade 1 means used but very good, probably wasn't actually issued just sat on a stores shelf till declared surplus and sold/stolen).

Flexothane, as worn widely by farmers.
They are slightly stretchy so easier to get on and off - and roll up remarkably small because the material is quite thin yet resistant to wear and tear.

Army issue MTP gore-tex for the win.

I'm rocking them. The zips are fine.

Currently using a Lidl PVC overjacket with the army torusers which is faultless.

Sealskinz knee-length socks with merino lining is like wearing wellie boots under your bike gear.

Indeed. As were mine from my locker in the squadron hangar at RAF Gutersloh.

Why have I never heard of this stuff before?

It seems almost too good to be true....

Anyway, I currently have a pair of plain green ex army goretex over-trousers and a PVC over jacket which only really get used in the summer if I get caught out. Once it turns a bit colder I use goretex lined leathers.

Flexothane is OK. I wear it every day at work. The surface waterproofing has a tendancy to crack and start peeling off after a while. More so if it's flapping about a lot.

Seams are fairly waterproof, I wouldn't necessarily be totally confident about coming away with dry balls after sitting in a pool of water in them for a while.

The main downside is that the lining is pretty absorbent so if you do get the inside of them wet, they take ages to dry. I wear them over wellies and water can track up the legs. I think this would be worse if they were flapping about over bike boots because they kind of "seal" against the wellies. I think they would do a lot of flapping and riding up on a bike.

If you want conventional (eg non-military, non-Goretex) gear, I've got a 2-piece Oxford Rainseal suit and am certainly very happy with it. Was Ride magazine's best buy.

I want to get the stuff the fishing guys wear on the trawlers but can't seem to find it. That stuff must be tried and tested to beyond destruction.

For nicked kit eternity is acceptable. I still want to skin whatever cunt stole my camelbak from the back of a warrior in the 2 minutes I took to walk to another vehicle and back.

The people selling bulk on eBay though I meant larger scale organised theft. When I was in it was pretty rife, I remember getting a kit issue prior to deploying out to BATUS and wondering why we were the only fuckers in the battlegroup not to get magnum boots. Found the answer that weekend, there was a market stall in Andover that had so many pairs of unissued, army issue magnums he must have needed a small lorry to get them all there.

I've used the RAF surplus goretex ones and they stood up well on a 70 mile daily commute, even in the worst of the rain.

Gortex keeps you dry, but it's only an inner lining so the outer shell still gets sodden, fine in the odd light shower but in torrential rain you still feel like your soaked through, and putting cold wet gear back on to head home from work isn't much fun.

I usually wear Gortex but wear cheap builders overtrousers/coat as well if I'm expecting heavy rain, keeps you dryer but you sweat badly.
