Looking at buying a commuter hack - F650CS. Bloke says it'll need a new belt, fair enough. But what the actual fuck, how fucking much?

Is there a non-OEM, or cheaper alternative to the OEM one that is nearly 300 beer tokens. Do I remember a reply on here with an alternative, or is that just wishful thinking.

There are aftermarket belts for Harleys, usually made by drag specialities. Much googling will be required to see if one will fit the BMW. Hunt around some American bike parts sites and see if you can find anything.

Expect the belt to still be over a hundred quid. They last a long time, but are expensive.

Cheers for the pointer. I get £100-£150. but some googling has pointed to the manufacturer (Gates) being very, very strict about exclusivity to BMW, and BMW have jacked the price a few times.
I'll have another look around, but at £300, it's almost what the bike itself is worth, and kills any idea of buying it. I'm not chucking money at a winter hack, and will look for a chain driven 650 instead.

If you could find the belt details Size/teeth

You could try a factor that does bearing & drive belts to see if they have anything the same size.
Only worry would be the quality.

Could be an urban myth but I've heard said a Renault Clio belt will fit a Ducati 916.. I guessing therefore there might be other parallels..

It looks like an F800 one is one tooth longer, and a few mm wider, but can *probably* be made to work, and they're about £100-£150.

I can see how you might be able to take up the tension, but how do you squeeze the extra 'few mm' between the sprocket channels?

Edit: just had a look at a few pictures of F650s and it looks like they only have a flange on the inside of the rear sprocket, so there might be room for some overhang on the outside, although there doesn't seem to be much clearance on the lower guard.

This chap is handy.

He breaks BMWs for parts.

I use them regularly.

Be aware belt change on a F650CS is a real pitta ! it is swing arm out as as there is no main stand it a real long job
Last time we estimated it was £500 in labour + a lot for the belt !
You have to strip the plastics drain the tank and oil remove the battery so you can lay the bike on it side ! Swing arm bolts often sized !

Or, instead of taking the entire bike to bits, you could put the footpegs in the other way round (so they flip down, not up) and stand it on two axle stands... Or go fully old-school and balance the bike on top of a milk crate. Just saying.

While I can probably sort it out and get a new belt on it., it sounds like too much bother even for a cheap-arse like me.
