Hi guys, recently bought an Enfield 500, starts & runs fine but when I switch the headlights on/flash & stop light is activated, the engine cuts out. If engine revs are increased lights do not stop engine. Also when engine is revving the amp meter doesn't increase, any help please, thanks.

Sounds like your bike isn't generating electricity. check stator first, the reg/rec and wiring.

It's probably a short circuit/bad earth (bulb socket, switches, wiring) and you should find it, as stuff might burn if you don't.

Does it run an alternator (AC) or a dynamo (DC)?

Does it have a battery?

What year? There are several different bullets. Does it have a separate engine and gearbox? Is it electric start? Does the headlight work with the engine off?

Turns out the the alternator can't cope with running lights at low rpm, so have to trickle charge every night to keep the batt topped up. Rolling Eyes

Yes has an alternator & battery, 1994 bike, kick start only, lights do run without engine when battery has enough juice. Don't know about separate gearbox. thanks.

What voltage is it giving out at about 3k revs? if it's less than 14.5v your alternator is knackered.

Ok.

It should work fine. You need to do some fault finding.

I'd say chances are you either have a bad earth or one of your charging phases is knackered.

Aftermarket alternators are cheap and effective and pretty easy to swap out if it's gone.

Here's a detailed fault finding guide.

Stinkwheel knows all about these beasts. See his thread on rebuilding a knackered one.
