Going to be looking at possibly restoring the wheels on the old DT soon. The rims and hubs are okay. Maybe they might not buff up perfectly but certainly well enough to paint if needed.

As an alternative to a complete rebuild I wondered whether something else might fit? The rear wheel is 18" x 1.4, drum brake. I found the rear wheel for a Honda CG 125 matches the broad parameters - even down to the number of spokes and spoke pattern...

It looks identical but it can't be that simple surely? Go on tell me what a moron I am for even suggesting it Smile

it may well be that simple.

Manufactures are not in the habit of creating new bespoke items for every model they produce.
often models will share many existing parts.

are you able to find the original part number for the wheels for the DT and then reference them with the part number for the CG ?
Often you will find original parts have been superseded with newer parts.

The rims just need to be the same diameter and width so no problems there but the hubs definitely will have different part numbers: I note the CG has the sprocket held on with 4 bolts vs the DT's 6 bolts.

AFAIK (and I really don't know much) if the overall hub width were the same along with the axle diameter it should work.

I'm thinking worse case scenario I can use the brand new rim and spokes and sub in the old hub - assuming the spoke length is the same. That'd be only slightly more cost over just buying spokes but with the bonus of a new rim Thinking

Starting to get a bit thin on the ground now Sad

<edit>

Scratch that. Second hand DT rims in good condition might be thin on the ground but generic 18x1.4, 36 spoke rims are common as muck.

Original hub + new spokes + new rim (if needed) yes... much more sensible.

To make things easier for everyone, it's a Yamaha DT 175 (1G1 model).

Go and measure things on your DT125 DT175.

Like the axle diameter, hub width, axle length and whatever else seems a good idea.

Then compare those measurements to CG125 parts.

A starting point... do your spacers look like these? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HONDA-CG125-REAR-WHEEL-AXLE-SPACERS-TENSIONERS-2-MOTORCYCLE-CON-B-/322745423435

This CG125 axle apparently has a diameter of 15mm https://www.brooksbarn.co.uk/CG125-REAR-AXLE-SPINDLE-15x228mm-CG125-ES4_ARTP5.aspx whilst this one is 13.94mm https://www.mandp.co.uk/products/cg125-rear-axle-686467

I doubt it will be a straight swap. Change the bearings and get appropriate spacers made up and maybe you could get CG125 wheels on. Whether it's worth the time, the hassle and the expense is another matter entirely. It sounds like a lot of unnecessary hassle to me. Laughing

I'd have thought that you've got more chance of a DT125 wheel fitting than a CG125 wheel. https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/131090/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=DT125+rear+wheel&LH_ItemCondition=4&rt=nc&LH_PrefLoc=1

In fact, some of the DT175 rear wheel listings on eBay (and on the above DT125 rear wheel listings) say that they're suitable for a DT125. https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/131090/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=DT175+rear+wheel&LH_PrefLoc=1&rt=nc&LH_ItemCondition=4

You really think that Yamaha and Honda deliberately make parts that directly interchange with a rival manufacturer's bike?

The front wheel is probably usable as is (although it wouldn't look pretty) with just a new tube and tyre. It looked like a simple solution for the rear - I was just dreaming Neutral

Not really, the CG ones were just something that popped up in a search suggestion and the old brain went "Hello!" Neutral Funny how you try and fool yourself with easy solutions.

I reckon you're seeing rusty spokes and getting into a bit of a tiswas. Calm down, deep breaths and go make a cuppa.
Have you tried looking for new spokes? The choices will be staggering from generic steel ones to heavy duty stainless etc.
