Can someone please give me some advice as to why my bike doesn't like going into neutral please!? Its a yamaha rxs100.
It seems to go in better when its moving, but if i come to a stop at lights and i'm in first at a standstill it just will not go into neutral for some reason Confused
cheers

Yeah I've tried that and it sometimes works, but more often than not it just won't go.

Does the lever jam or does it skip it and go into the gear above/below?

maybe the clutch is a bit cold, what you can do it while in neutral give it a little revs and let out the clutch just a little then try to put it into first, it should clunck in, be sure to be covering the brakes when you do it! Very Happy

It's quite common, just snick it into neutral before you stop.

I can't tell you why it won't do it, something to do with about three billion tiny cogs not spinning at the same rate I suspect! Razz

I suspect it's suffering from "I'm-an-old-bike-that's-been-ragged-for-a-decade-syndrome".

Get used to holding that clutch in Wink

My MZ was tempramental about going into neutral, it was easier to knock down from second though.

They don't test the engine or gearbox during the MOT, it certainly used to be the case that you didn't even have to have an engine in the bike, you could MOT a rolling chassis.

We are spoiled these days because most modern bikes have a neutral finder in the gearbox that makes the change to neutral when stationary very positive. Many older bikes are (and always were) a complete pig to get into neutral when stationary, you get used to it with practice.

If your not sure go to a local bike shop and get them to have a look at it, firstly its not going to cost too much (you hope) and secondly the pro's should be able to fix it.

An oil (and filter) change might help, ive found when the oil needs a change getting it into neutral at stop is a pain (it tends to skip past) my cx did the same so did my cg... worth a go...

Edit: One other cgs little tricks i'd forgoten about... Engine off, first gear, leting the clutch out drag the bike backwards and then try going up a gear, if not move forward and then back again.. yep that was a bit of a pain...

As evryone else has said its a common problem with old bikes, the trick i was told and has worked till now is grab the front brake and let out the clutch a little till it starts to pull, then bring the clutch back in and try for neutral again it normally works for me.

You may need to get your clutch plates replaced as they maybe now wearing out !

Clutch Kits and read the info section shown next your model of bike via a link;

Just wheeling the bike back a few inches whilst putting pressure on the lever can be a big help and normally makes it work.

Alternatively, adjusting the clutch cable tighter so that it pulls the plates further apart fully in can be a help but probably won't be much use for going slowly as the biting point will be much further forward and they might not engage fully when the lever is fully out.

A poorly adjusted clutch can make a fairly major difference to gear selection if it's too loose, and if it's too tight, it'll slip at high rpm.

At the end of it all, getting used to pulling off in second gear and slipping the clutch will be of most use in sticky spots. Sometimes it just doesn't want to play.
