The stock exhaust on the CMX500 is a bit of a lump:

https://www.honda.co.uk/content/dam/central/motorcycles/colour-picker/street/cmx500_rebel/cmx500_rebel_nv_2019/nh-303m_matteaxisgreymetallic/cmx500_rebel_nv_2019_nh-303m_matteaxisgreymetallic.png/jcr:content/renditions/c4.png

It's so wide it actually goes beyond the foot pegs and is the biggest "sticky-out-bit" on the bike (beyond the handlebars.) I don't like it Sad

There are a few Rebel-specific exhausts that mostly look like Chinese crap with an extra bit of pipe welded to them and totally overpriced. Instead I'm considered a link pipe but the only one I've found is the Lextek:

https://www.lextekproducts.com/img/125100185_300.jpg

Which is okay but it doesn't have those loops for springs. Are those really needed? Is it hard to weld them onto stainless steel?

Just leave it stock. Anyone who fits an exhaust for reasons other than dyno proven power gains should be killed.

Yes, welding to stainless steel is hard unless you have the correct TIG setup.

Silver soldering, not so hard, providing you have an appropriately strong source of heat.

That's on the list Thumbs Up

Fair enough an exhaust isn't an essential but it annoys me twice a day when I try and get in and out of my front gate. Aesthetics and practicality, not so interested in performance or sound.

^ This x1000!

I've always said changing exhausts, air box's, filters should only ever be done for engine tuning reasons. This could be as a result of engine tuning needing aftermarket or custom pipework/induction to get the benefits of the work done.

Or it could be done in its own right to improve engine performance through better breathing.

Sadly performance is usually the least favourite reason these days for people changing exhaust systems. Looks, individuality and then sound are top of most peoples reasons for wanting to change exhausts.

They fail to see how much work and development that the manufacturers put into OEM stuff, and are prepared to screw up performance for a garish looking burnt tip fancy exit look at my pipe abomination.

Weight loss. Some modern cans weigh a fucking ton. Easily a 5KG difference between my Delkevic and a standard can, if you can find one, on the VFR750, and I imagine a modern bike is probably worse.

I primarily changed the one on my VFR so I can get the back wheel out without removing the exhaust.

Also because micron.

If you see a 1980s Kawasaki on the road, chances are high it will have a complete aftermarket exhaust system. The originals are very rare now, and command a high price if they're pristine. Exhausts rot, badly, over time. Motad's business model relied heavily on that. They used to boast that their exhaust systems were not only fully compliant with whatever noise limits were applicable to a particular bike under C&U regs, but that their systems were plug-and-play, and didn't require rejetting.

Mmm... I can't use a standard paddock stand because of the fat exhaust.

I don’t think weight is an issue here, it’s a fucking 500 rebel. Unless you cut half of it off and chuck it in the skip it’s never going to be light.

Aye. Tell that to the hundreds of GPZ500s up and down the country with holes melted in the right hand side of their belly pan. Wink

You can also stick weld stainless but it can be a 'sticky' faffle on. It's also thin metal so just don't. Tig is the answer.
As mentioned by others just stay with the exhaust. It can get complex because performance will be affected.

Point taken on stainless. If I do ever get into welding it'd probably be a cheap MIG to start with so that says mild steel I guess.

Of course unless one is approaching mods in entirely the wrong fashion the whole point is if you don't like it you put the original parts back on Smile

I shall think on it, thank you all for your advice Thumbs Up

How about taking 5-10kg off the side of the bike, and not having to worry about burning tailpacks etc if you switch to carbon cans? Thumbs Up
