Hi.

Have owned a 1982 honda melody ns50 for about 20 years.
Always went for years after not using it for months.
Didn't touch it for 4 years and apparently, I need to drain (or clean) the carburettor. (I live rurally and no shops closeby).
I was told to just unscrew something on the carburettor and let old gas drain until it goes clear and see if it starts however after researching the net I can't find the screw lol.
If anyone could post any info or edit a pic to show where I have a play with that would be appreciated thanks!!
(Sorry about the watermarks)

I dunno what the flip is going on with Photobucket. I can't seem to download any of the images Sad

Anyways... on the left side of the bike you have the the CVT and above that is the carb (as the nexus to all those pipes) with the back air box attached to the carb's right-hand side.

Where the air box has that sort arm sticking out I think the screw you're after is just under there. I could just see it in the last photo before it spontaneously combusted.

Haha yea photos are coming and going, these ones should stay here now!
Ok I will check this out in the morning, thank you for the explanation.
I will take clearer photos of this part tomorrow if I am unsure to post.
I saw youtube videos of guys using vacumes to blow gas out, completely taking the carb to bits to clean etc, but one guy said just loosen this screw you showed where it may be and gas might drain out and could do the trick.

It's a Delux. Thumbs Up

God, I remember when everything was Delux. Cars, vacuum cleaners, hotels Laughing

It's somewhat gone out of fashion hasn't it.

I cant help thinking its all absolutely filthy . You can barely see the carburettor under all that dirt ,never mind the head of a screw about the diameter of a pencil.
Give yourself a chance and clean it up a bit . Mister muscle and an old tooth brush , followed by a water spray . Whatever you have got really.

Haha yep pretty dirty...CLEANED...

Is it that flat head screw or one of the smaller ones underneath it?
I began to unscrew the top one out but it looked like it had a spring in it too so I stopped and thought I better check here first.
So just completely screw one of these out, let the gunk drain out, then put it back in and mix some new fuel in and give it a crack?

In a word, no. You have started to unscrew a jet. The screw you want is below the two on view at the bottom of the bowl.

You need to move the black plastic and you shoud see something like

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/proxy/PCsJyR21t3ETdsL-J6EoX3MTeuZnhJziVFDb5ukqWqWKde8hbnEk0aKP4PAfcgt0mK6BdmDqBTxwlMe3rUskMYJSA9-6IznMozQqp_7lfL6lM_oKTEi19A0jBe2W4U0FLmWXKIDpy9raP_HgS04Kfg

Not exactly the same as yours but you get the idea. The drain is right at the bottom of the bowl. Below is the microfiche of a melody carb. Again it might not be the exact one you have but it's very similar.

Ah ok. I didn't notice the bottom one. But I just opened them all up and not one bit of liquid drained out of any haha. Does that mean its completely shagged? haha

Yes it's the one you can see below the black plastic.

Now you have removed and replaced the jets you will need to set them up again. A manual will give you a starting point, something like screw right in then out 1.5 turns. Then you take it from there.

It's years since I've played with carbs but as you have buggered around with the settings why not take the time to remove it, strip it down and clean it properly.

As far as nothing coming out, it won't from the jets. It will from the drain but if it doesn't is your fuel tap open or is it a vacuum tap with a prime position?

Dunno whether its a thing or not. BUt I thought the pipe from the manifold to the vacuum diaphragm on the tap looks a bit split. That would stop the petrol turning on ..... An area to check Is there a priming position on the tap??

Yes, it's a vacuum valve on the tank and good observation! Pipe is quite cheap and easy to cut to size... treat yourself!

I managed to take one of the lines off from the tank valve and it was bone dry. I couldnt get the other one off and and hoping that this is an easy tank valve problem and maybe not the carb? haha. Or I'm dreaming and have to get the other one off for sure to see?

That's a vacuum operated fuel tap.

TBH I've never seen one like that before (but then I've never owned a Melody Laughing )

That won't pass fuel without a vacuum operating it (the pipe you have removed)

If there is fuel in the tank, get a bit of tube and stick it onto the fuel tap then suck on the pipe to create a vacuum. If this doesn't work the diaphragm in the fuel tap may be split which would mean a replacement tap or repair kit, presuming these are repairable. Open the carb drain or remove the other pipe and see if fuel comes out when you suck on the vacuum pipe.

I wouldn't even touch the carb until you have proved the petrol supply to it. 1 thing at a time and then see if that works before moving on or you will just confuse yourself.

If the tank is empty, or nearly remove the vacuum tap and clean any debris out from the tank and the strainer ,if fitted.
Treat all the old lines with care, they will split easily.

That is actually your cue to replace them Smile But obviously go careful if you don't have spare pipe on hand.

UPDATE. Alright, gave in and took it into a shop (live out of town), guy got it going but said the vacum thing couldnt suck the gas so swapped the two cords coming out of the gas tank and it could start then swapped them around. Told me I need a new gas tank valve. Is there a specific website to buy parts or just ebay mostly?

https://img4.imagetitan.com/img4/small/21/21_img_7572.jpg

Also, when I got home, I have now noticed a leak under the chain case. This is an even bigger job to fix now probably? lol

You can fit any fuel tap as long as the thread size to the tank is the same. If it's a manual you just blank the vacuum pipe. If the thread size is the same, this wll work and under 4 squid.

https://www.racing-planet.co.uk/m16x15-metal-kymco-p-198293-1.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=google_merchant&utm_campaign=google_products&gclid=Cj0KCQiA7aPyBRChARIsAJfWCgJqWpQpVPKIfR3-UdSCIRIiCZ_8pYkCIrDjst6prae3OUPBGXWgfIUaAr5lEALw_wcB#.Xko8fSPgrIV

As to you leak, you need to find out exactly where its coming from, a gasket or from between the transmission and the wheel. Both will be strip downs to repair, seal or gasket.

Petcock would be more reliable than vacuum valve but that does mean you have to remember to turn it on and off. Either petcock or vacuum valve you just need to match the tank thread - as per Polarbear's suggestion - get the ruler out Smile

Leak looks to be fuel rather than oil so I would suspect the aforementioned valve is now stuck open and you're getting a leak from the carb overflow. Either that or the carb bowl drain hasn't been tightened up.

UPDATE 2.
I took out the tank and tried to fit my new fuel valve on. Didn't fit, screw too big, so will go into shops and ask around tomorrow. It looks different and doesn't have a big long rod, is that important? Does it have anything to do with the vacum/carb stuff? or any valve that can fit is all ok?

1. Is there any particular website you know where I could buy one that actually fits a 1982 honda melody ns50 haha?

2. Should I clean the gas tank while it's off? If so are those youtube vinegar and baking soda/water tutorials reliable or should I just go to a shop for some chemical liquid?

Thank you for your support!

1. Clean tank out. Put in some fuel, slosh around and drain, Unless the tank is a pile of rust inside that should clean it of crud.

2. Is the thread size different or won't the fatter filter bit fit? If it's thread size, get an adaptor or to quote Clint, adapt and improvise.

3. Did you ever test the old one to see if it's OK. If the vacuum pipe to it is perished it won't work.

Watch this - explains how it all works even though it's yankish!

What you have there is a super-generic vacuum valve that fits almost anything... current and modern Wink

Bit far away (Germany) but if you get really stuck, here's the part:
