Hi Guys,

Ive owned a beautiful SH125 for 10 years literally used everyday and serviced by me, I know it inside out, love the bike as second bike and my run around.

In the early hours I hear some banging noise, I just thought it was foxes or cats in the bins which is normal. Anyway parent comes home and says wheres you scooter/// heart sinks. Its been nicked. suprisingly left my 6Rninja next to it (heavily chained and covered)

I go out to look immediately, while on phone to cops, I saw a man jogging away from me, immediately shouted at him and run towards him, he took off into some garden meanwhile im yelling down the phone at cops because they had 3 units in the area, they had just located the scooter! So 2mins later they got to me and i showed them where he went, they sent in a dog but didnt find the bastard Sad

So the Sgt walked me to by scoot which has the front end smashed up, steering lock bust, ig barrel screwdrivered really badly, fairings mashed up... they left their helmet and tools inc a hammer on the floor near the bike...

Anyway cop says to me crime scene investigators wont come out this time of night to take prints so I have to push it back to my house 200m away. or have it recovered which incurs a fee...

I said I dont wna touch it with my hands, so he gave me gloves to wear and I pushed it home...

Now, Ive been biking for 13 years now and never had a bike stolen, so wnt to really get upto speed on what next...ie how I play this out with the insurers etc.

The bike is worth approx 800-1000.. I would say its repairable but will be expensive considering steering lock, barrel, multiple fairings, mirrors, paint work etc..

What is likely to happen here? will i pay an excess and they give me market value for the bike, or does it become complicated because even though it was stolen, it was found within an hour and now back on my drive, albeit mashed up and not rideable till fixed? Am with Hastings.

Any advice would be great.

Cheers

Don't worry about not touching it as scene of crime officers will not be interested. If you use it as a commuter then new barrel and repair panels and use it. The level of fixing up is relative to how pretty you want it - fibre glass and spray paint or just gaffa tape. If you pushed it home then I'm assuming the steering lock is not fouling in any way.

Extra locks to stop the next attempt.

I would not be claiming and paying excess for a 125 scoot worth £1000.

You need to contact your broker as soon as . . .

In this scenario there is little prospect of the brokers making a killing by acting as a claims manager as there is little prospect of any other insurer paying anything out.

IME, your broker will arrange for the bike to be assessed, they'll either come to you or lift it to a repair center. Are you entitled to a hire bike? If you have other suitable transport I wouldn't bother with this.

Good chance the bike will be written off as UTR, now you need to agree with them its true value immediately before it was stolen. You either get paid this amount & walk away, or they might let you buy the bike back by paying you a lesser amount & let you keep the bike. It will have a 'CAT' status applied to it & even with a good repair it will never be worth what it was.

Big thing to consider, you now have a claim for theft against you which will bump up all of your vehicle insurance premiums & you are about to discover the utter pointlessness of protected no claims bonus.

If it were me & I could repair the bike for £100-£200ish I'd keep it quiet from the insewerers & not claim. Kill a local hoodie scrote for revenge, any will do (word gets around).

Good luck, I hope it goes smoothly for you.

^ ignore the retard.

Don't contact your insurers at all. It's a scoot. Just fix and live with it. You clearly think less of it than your other bike to no have an alarm or chain it up. Fix and ride. Few quid.

Thanks for advice guys.

I think the overall advice here is not to attempt to claim as effect on my future policies will be effected ?

Will the bike come up on a HPI check as stolen or stolen recovered? Or will that only happen if insurers are told ...

I’ve not changed a barrel before but will this do https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Honda-Ignition-Switch-Barrel-seat-lock-SH125-SH150-2005-2006-2007-2008-2009-2010/222171649268?hash=item33ba7654f4:g:liQAAOSwB4NWvKVI

I’m guessing it houses the steering lock pins to ?

At the moment I don’t have full freedom of movement on the steering. It goes full to the right but only about 20-30 degree left then jams with no obvious obstruction. It that likely to be the pins from the steering lock or something else. ?

Regarding the barrel, you don't say what year yours is so assuming yours is one of the years listed then that's all good unless you want to save some ponds and look for a second hand set.

YouTube is your friend for replacing it as well as steering lock removal/replacement.

As far as I am aware the stolen/recovered records/database is an insurance thing so nobody will be any the wiser but I'm guessing you are not looking to fix up and sell so why worry?

What was your parent doing in 'the small hours' - out and about?

How come the 'suspect' was still wandering about by the time you were informed got dressed etc.. and why didn't he take his helmet with him?

Yea 2009 so should fit. Just looked in my Haynes. It’s pretty vague paragraph. But I don’t think it will be tricky once access is there. It is likely that the steering lock is fouling the movement of the steering ?

Why on earth did they shove a screw driver in the barrel and try n twist it. ! Bastards

... the guy was fleeing and dumped his shit. Which has all been collected for evidence. I gave pursuit but then stopped to direct the police who stopped looking haha they said we got a dog on the way. By the time the dog came he was long gone. Probably into local pikey safe house.

Put enough effort into it and it'll probably turn the bike on the same as the key does.

"cop says to me crime scene investigators wont come out this time of night"

Laughing or any other feckin night (or day) for a stolen bike/scoot.

As above, just fix it and get better security
If Ins co did get involved they'd probably Cat N it on pictures alone
A guy I know had his Cat C'd on pics alone last year

Decided not to go through insurance for now. Really need to asses the bike though check forks and casting where lock is in case of any serious damages. But can’t touch it as they’re apparently coming (forensics) but who knows. I bet they won’t.

Anyone have experience of replacing the barrel / will just plug any play or does it need to programme to the ecu or anything, as far as I can tell no fancy immobiliser like the Honda HISS

East European crims lifting bikes into vans I can understand: money to be made from the parts. But what value is there in a smashed up scooter?

The one I found for its owner recently was in a similar state "kids go joy riding on them" commented the PCSO. "Joy" apparently has an entirely different meaning these days Sad

We used to call 'em "The Blue Transit Motorcycle Club", but I suppose these days it'll be a white Sprinter.

Only the (spits) journalists of your MSM ever called them "Joy Riders", which seems to have transferred across to vocabulary of the sheeple that read the shite.

To be fair there are plenty of CCTV clips and social media uploads of kids larking about on housing estates on (presumably) stolen scooters.

Having driven/ridden push bikes, eBikes - both legal and overpowered, scooters, motor bikes, cars, vans, speed boats, tractors, 4x4 off roaders, APCs... quite a few things really Smile Anyhoo, "least joy award" definitely goes to the scooter!

It was more a point about how rock-bottom you'd have to be for such a vehicle to be entertaining.
