Hello guys.

So I recently bought a very nice vintage looking Honda CG. I have rather overdone it with the security and installed a tracker. But I really like the bike. I’ve just wired it for power so red and black rather than alarm and powercut. etc.

I also wired in a cable to use my roxon optimiser I have for my fazer.

The tracker LED is flashing although I haven’t managed to get it to work yet (itrack micro). But I’ll work on that.

A couple of more serious problems have arisen.

Since installing the tracker the indicators are acting strange. They come on, sometimes stay on and sometimes flash.

Also, despite being pretty sure I’ve wired the cable correctly the battery optimiser doesn’t show any of the usual lights which suggest it’s hooked up.

If anyone could shed any light on what I may have done wrong here I’d be very grateful. I’m pretty sure the batter is 12v. There’s nothing on the battery to say otherwise and a similar motobatt online says 12v

I’m a bit worried without the optimiser the battery will drain but this is a Brazilian 2000 model which is kickstart so does it matter if the battery drains?

Many thanks
Rob

It'll run because the spark is on a different coil and I think it'll run the lights too without the battery (if they don't come on with the engine off, the lights are direct powered).

However the flashers, horn and brake light come off the battery.

One concern is that the charging system on these bikes is pretty weedy in terms of output so you may be drawing more than it can give.

Flashers is an easy fix. Fit LED bulbs and an electronic relay. I'd do this anyway, saves a lot of grief and makes for good, bright, reliable flashers.

It may be that the battery is so flat your optimiser isn't detecting enough voltage to start charging (doesn't know it's connected to a battery). You can sometimes "jump" thenm into charging mode by connecting them up momentarily to another 12v battery across the terminals.

You could also check this by testing the resting voltage of your battery. Anything below about 9v and a lot of chargers wont kick in.

Or run the bike for a bit to get some charge into it.

If you repeatedly flatten the battery, you will kill it.

Thanks that’s very helpful. I might need to come back to you on details as I’m pretty new to this stuff. I’ve wanted to change lights to LED’s anyway so I’ll get some of those.

You may well be right about the battery. I’m sure I remember the green neutral light coming on with the ignition originally but now only after engine has started. I’ll get my multimeter out tomorrow.

Thanks

Turns out I'd blown the fuse! So the indicators were just running of the power from the engine. Hence not enough. Since I've changed that tracker working again and indicators too.

With regards to the LED's though, I'd like to change them all over. What am I looking for? I know the front is bay20d (L6 I think). Do I need relay with that as well as for the indicators.

Thanks
Rob

Older CG125s have direct AC lighting, newer ones have DC lighting. I'm not sure where the cut-off is in terms of models but if the headlight will come on with the engine off, it's DC. If they only work with the engine running, it's AC.

You can't use an LED bulb with AC.

Not strictly speaking true but ones that work with AC (they incorporate their own rectifier) are rare, i.e. expensive.

So, not running on AC then? Wink

You can use positive earth LED stop and tail lights on AC but you won't see any difference in brightness between stop and tail.
