PostPosted: 09:20 - 15 Apr 2020    Post subject: Selling my scoot Reply with quote

Morning all,
Im currently selling my current bike, my old car wants a bit too much spending on it, i did order a replacement from a dealer but it closed for the virus a day before i was due to collect and as im working from home i dont need the scoot besides the car was a lot of cash and its one or the other really.
As its a large sum how do i make a bill of sale that protects me?, in case someone takes it, messes with it and tries to say its faulty, yes im not that trusting, apparently someone from down south is interested but wants me to send an image of the V5?, do i put anything specific in the bill of sale? And is bank transfer the safest way?
any help appreciated
Mark

Seeing a copy of the V5 is fine, but I would blank out the reference number, and, possibly your address if you're that concerned to begin with. Ultimately though, if you're that paranoid, you may feel safer going through something like we buy any bike, providing they want your make & model of scoot, or, failing that selling to a dealer, both of those options are likely to mean you get less money for it though.

Isn't a private sale 'caveat emptor'? Buyer beware?

I just put sold as seen on two receipts. Sign and get buyer to sign and you keep one and him the other. I even did that with a 40 grand boat and there is no V5 for one of them!

It's what I have always done and never had any comeback. What the actual legalities are though, I could be very wrong.

Might simply want proof that he does have the V5, afteral, don't want to buy a bike/scooter only to find later that it doesn't come with a V5. Personally, I wouldn't buy a vehicle if the seller didn't have the V5.

Exactly as you say... if you sell privately, thats that.

Thanks, it was through my daughters facebook marketplace as i dont do any of that, my daughter gave him my number but no sign of a call yet.
Bikes fine, a few marks but thats reflected in the price, but London seems a long way to come for a common scoot.
we will see what happens.

I'd only send a pic of the V5 that shows the front with everything except the vehicle reg blanked out.

Other than that if the photos are good I'd ignore any request beyond "when can I come see". Facebook is one of the worst for endless messages with shit offers, stupid requests or trades for a bucket of puppies and a playstation.

If it explodes as soon as they ride it off once sold it's not your problem so give zero shits there.

I prefer large piles of cash to bank transfers. Last bank transfer I did to buy a bike took 2 hours to go through. After 45 minutes the guy let me go on the bike (alot of trust in someone he had met for under an hour).

As far as I know, there are legal safeguards even when buying privately. Do you know any?

I stand to be corrected but does the buyer not have to prove you had prior knowledge of the faults and hid them?

If so that is pretty hard to do. I've sold some wrecks that have died the same day and always stuck to the "I had no idea mate", line.

Quite often I've had hand scrawled notes, possibly in crayon, saying "sold: 1 car, reg X123 XYZ..." so I've taken to making up a nice looking certificate whenever I sell anything. All the relevant detail spots are there (to remind me to fill it all in properly) and also lets me have a whole load of fine print at the bottom Smile

You don't need to state any faults but when asked specifically something and you lie about it, then there is a comeback. If you shrug and say your're not sure then no problems. This is why whenever I sell a car I list every fault I genuinely know. It actually attracts buyers in my experience.

Definitely! I wrote a fricking essay about my Superlight - a parting love note, if you will - and it did result in a good sale and for way more than I expected.

Agreed 100%.

I won't even entertain a "token gesture" advert for anything, never mind a bike or car.

You know the ones I mean......

"2005 'Blade,
Runs well, never seen rain,
33k. No offers"

And that's it, no details at all. Maybe I should post this in "Grinds My Gears" actually? Laughing

List it factually and definitely don't say stuff like 'good runner' or 'gearbox perfect' in the advert

And if you do a quick search, you'll find that the AA do a receipt that kind of covers everything and you both sign it at the point of sale
