Started to replace the front tyre on the GT250 and once the tyre was off noticed that rim and nipples were quite corroded. Normally I would just wire brush and spray on some zinc rich paint but this looks quite bad...
Anyhow figured I might try and waste some more of my time rebuilding the front with an alloy rim (cos they look cooler obvs)..
Two cheap options found .. 2nd hand MZ (approx 30 quid) or new (assumed Chinese) 45 quid.
Will also need 36 new spokes approx 180 mm - any good sources other than ebay?
Cheers all. ____________________ Now: A100, SRX250, XJ598, FZ750, SL1000

The Zappau factory made top quality alloy componants, even if their machining tolerances occasionally left someting to be desired. Even the most neglected MZs don't go furry, despite the engine and rims being bare alloy. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. I got my stainless steel spokes for the DT from the Devon Rim company. They seemed pretty sharp.
<addendum> I would say you could have a lend of my wheel truing stand but maybe now's not the time ____________________ Royal Enfield Continental GT 535, Husqvarna Vitpilen 401, Yamaha XSR700, Honda Rebel, Yamaha DT175, Suzuki SV650 (loan) Fazer 600, Keeway Superlight 125, 50cc turd scooter |

True them in the bike. Even if they land up on the piss, they'll be true for the bike they're going in. You can usually find a way of attaching a DGI to the swingarm.fork leg. Or just wrap a cable tie round, cut the end square and eyeball it off the end of that (surprisingly effective). ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. Find some off another bike and make them fit? ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

Ok so MZ s/h rim arrived and I checked it for flatness against a sheet of glass and it rocks by 3mm so not that flat. Will it true up? I can press it flat on a table.
Seller will take it back so not that keen to chase a lost cause. ____________________ Now: A100, SRX250, XJ598, FZ750, SL1000

My honda H100 manual (just because it was handy and also has spoked wheels) quotes a maximum runout of 2mm so it's probably within tolerance for an MZ already.
That's with the wheel laced up mind. Unlaced rims are just bendy hoops of metal until they are brought under tension. If I laced a wheel and STARTED at 3mm runout before trueing, I'd be delighted. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. Thanks both - that's helpful.. Done some push-bike wheels in the past but they are pretty flimsy in comparision. ____________________ Now: A100, SRX250, XJ598, FZ750, SL1000
