Dirty Chinese Quad

New here but not to bikes.
During this lockdown period I have been unlucky enough for one of my neighbours to donate a sickly Apache 4S quad 50cc for my 7 yr old.
It has been stood so here we go:
Stripped out carb cleaned all jets needle float, set float.
CV carb so replaced lines splits in at least 2
Carb manifold boot split now repaired.
Fuel pump replaced.
Carb has new K&N style filter fitted no sign of original air box!!
Bike will not start without putting hand over the air intake, it then sucks fuel through and with hand removed and fettling of the throttle will run badly at full throttle or runs for 10 seconds and bogs down.
Seems to me it is not getting enough fuel through or to much air.
These things are bad enough when new!
Any ideas appreciated as now have 7yr old asking when it will be running every day of lockdown!!

50cc with a cv carb - you sure?

Have you checked valve clearances/ tappets - assuming its a four stroke..

Yes unfortunately so with auto choke!
No fuel tap two inline filters, plenty of pump when the engine turns so assuming fair compression
Don't really want to go to the pain of checking clearance and no reference to sizes available to me.

Previous owner says carb was renewed but obviously has been stood as it was green inside and the needle was stuck in position all been cleaned and set at least four times so far.
If I place my palm over the carb intake there is plenty of pull and fuel vapor on palm, keep cranking with hand removed and feathering the throttle can sometimes get it to run very poorly at full throttle.
I have it jacked up at the rear !!
Or will fire run for 5-10 seconds then die

Something's still bunged up. Take the carb apart again and double-check. Don't poke jets through with wire, use air or a plastic bristle. Water in there somewhere? Corrosion? "Detritus"?

If it's a CV carb, have you checked the diaphragm for splits/pinholes?

Pretty much a 50cc scooter engine whacked in a quad frame...

For "fun" I did experiment with pod filters on my "Turd Scooter" refurb. You might want to look over the thread in "Show & Tell" as it looks to be basically the same engine. Basically I gave up and used the stock airbox and all was lovely.

Is it the stock exhaust? What size jets does it have in the carb?

Well gents:
starter or solenoid jammed and fried the electrics!
so:
renewed electrics
renewed solenoid
renewed coil
stripped starter motor and engine casing and re furbed
New boot for carb manifold
stripped carb and cleaned again
stripped and replaced all fuel line, filters and pump.
happy to say she starts runs and pulls like a 50cc train
One happy 7 yr old and a happy Grandad can get back to real bikes.
Though it has proved its worth I fitted a large rake device and levelled the garden ready for turf!!
