What's the best concoction to use in a ultrasonic cleaner when you have run out of the proper fluid. I've tried water with washing up liquid and it's no where near as good.

Has anyone got any tips using stuff from around the house as my cleaning fluid doesn't look like coming for a week or so.

I have 2 cleaners, 1 big and 1 small so I can get away with smaller amounts for now, probably half a litre.

I found a safety data sheet for carb cleaning ultrasonic solution.

https://cdn.bcf.44bytes.net/files/ultrasonic_cleaning_solution.jpg

It seems to be 10% volatile organic chemicals and I don't think there is much if any detergent in there. I'd say paraffin would be closer than water and washing up liquid? I'm not sure whether that's safe to use in an ultrasonic cleaner though?

Jesus, that looks nasty. Perhaps I'd better be a bit more careful with the real stuff when it arrives. Laughing

It's basically sodium silicate and a few solvents. It's certainly not on the nastier end of what is legally allowed to be sold to ordinary folk. Don't drink it, basically!

The problem is that's quite expensive, and not diluted. The volatile elements of the mixture need to be soluble so you can mix it with water.

I'll ask the missus (who has a masters in organic chemistry and is pretty much an expert in industrial cleaning solutions) when I get a chance. Thumbs Up

I did this. She said the alchohols make it evaporate, and the sodium Silicate is a thickener (which she's not used). It contains EDTA which is a chelating agent apparently.

She said that it has to be a formulated cleaner, but nothing too specific - her words were 'it's not a sophisticated cleaner'. She suggested floor cleaner? or Glass cleaner? She said fairy liquid was not a good idea.

Basically look for something that contains MEA and EDTA:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethanolamine
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethylenediaminetetraacetic_acid

She's concerned about advising anything specific because she doesn't know about the ultrasonic cleaner and whether it's safe to use certain things in it? But she also said if she found the right product she'd know... It's not a simple answer sadly. For example different glass cleaners contain different ingredients so not all glass cleaners will work.

Cheers Marjay.

We have glass cleaner so I'll try that. If it works I'll get a few bottles from Asda tomorrow to tide me over.

Thumbs Up

Look at the label, if it contains EDTA and MEA then it's OK. If it's got vinegar in? probably not because that's a different way of stopping the glass from going streaky. Sadly, glass cleaner is not just 'glass cleaner' and floor cleaner is not 'floor cleaner' even though there is a small number of chemicals that work to clean things and are still legal.

You can put whatever your choice of cleaning fluid in a bag with the parts, then immerse the sealed bag in the ultrasonic bath, which you just fill with tap water.

The cleaning works as the ultrasonic pulses travel through the bag.
The dirty fluid gets thrown away, you'll have used less of it and the ultrasonic cleaner is pristine.

That's a great idea! Thumbs Up

However, it's nothing really, in comparison to using trinitroxypropane fluid in your ultrasonic cleaner, which will clean the component, the cleaner, you, the room you're working in and, depending on how big your cleaner is, potentially the entire building.

It's poison, amongst other things, so you'd have to apply to your local police for a permit. The only trouble is you'd probably only be able to obtain a more solid form, so it might be better to just make it. Tell them you're doing it, of course.

I don't have an ultrasonic cleaner, can't justify the cost.
However a while back I needed to clean the teeth of a tablesaw blade, they get covered in a "varnish" which, presumably, is the glue in plywood and other manmade boards melting and then coating the teeth.
It's a bugger to get off even with abrasives.
I got a washing up bowl, filled it with enough hot water to cover the blade and chucked in a dishwasher tablet.
Five minutes later the saw blade was like new.
Since then I've tried it on a couple of brass items, I found in the garden, obviously been there for decades, scrubbing with a plastic scourer didn't touch them, hot water and a dishwasher tab worked straightaway.
May be worth a shot in an ultrasonic cleaner!

The Aldi ones are abut £25 and big enough to fit a carb in. For someone with a second home in Cyprus, that's hardly breaking the bank.

I use mine a lot, being into old 2T's and it's worthy it's weight in gold to me.

No need - just antagonises.

You had to have a dig with a political slant though, in a totally non political thread? That is a dick move however you cut it.

Just go, just leave. Just don't ever log on here... It's boring and it can't be doing you any good.

To update - glass cleaner worked reasonably well. Not as good as the proper liquid but then you wouldn't expect that.

I'm going to try water and a dishwasher tablet just for the lols but that will be in my big cleaner, I think it will be a bit much with one tablet in the 500ml of liquid my little cleaner takes.

Any way, the proper stuff should arrive tomorrow or Monday but it's fun experimenting.
