So as some of you may be aware, I’ve been twatting about with a spare exhaust for my bike.
After much swearing, drilling, grinding, and tack-welding in new bolts to the silencer , I have a complete, tatty, but usable spare exhaust.

I now want to smarten up the down pipes and collector box.
So after a wire brush up and a clean up, I want to paint them.

So oh mighty BCF, do you have any recommendations?
Any particular product or brand of uht paint?

Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Have you thought about wrapping rather than paint? I've painted the pipes on my 929 before I replaced the system and it looked naff, even with a decent job.

Plastikote woodstove paint.

Just did Mrs stinkwheels exhaust with simonize VHT but never used it on an exhaust before. Seems to cope with enfield cylinder barrely well though.

Both are very easy to apply.

You mean paint the collector box, not the downpipes.. do you?

It's just i've yet to come across a really decent HT paint - at least out of all the ones i've tried so far, i'm sure someone will know of a good one, but nothing will stick to the downpipes. It'd burn off after a day's riding.

The best i've tried, or least worst, was oven/woodburner paint. I don't remember the brand i'm afraid. Although it held ok, it didn't really have a nice finish.

Nah! It’s the old pipes, they’re usable if needed.
Clean em up, paint them and put them away until needed.

Maybe too late, but I second the Simoniz VHT paint. Other paints seem to be 'dusty' like the Halfords offering, when dry - before heat curing (using the exhaust). Simoniz dries like a conventional paint, ie. not 'dusty' or easy to wipe off, and has proved quite enduring on my collector. Definitely longer-lived than others I have tried. Not downpipes I admit, but close enough.

Good shout, I've done some exhaust bits in stove paint and you have to be a bit careful with it once it's dry but not yet had a blast of heat, quite easy to chip a bit off.

+1 for the Plastikote woodstove paint. It's a doddle to apply and produces an excellent finish. It does need heat to cure properly. Thumbs Up

MIPAtherm.
Lasts well on the Viffers downpipes. spray and brush on, oven (pipes) and air cure also available, check the spec sheets.

What about a hot air gun if kept at a sensible distance?

Ideal would be to bolt it back on the bike and run the engine for 5-10 minutes.
