To everyone who's replied, here's a video of the leak.
As you can see the bolt won't be that easy to get off, but I'll find a way if need be. By seal, I just mean the opening is no longer sealed by the bolt. But as I said, the actual oil leakage is next to nothing (and even less since I took this video as I've shifted the bolt slightly). My main concern is the air leak...
You guys think anything actually needs replacing? I don't think the gasket is damaged. Maybe just a case of taking apart and putting together again?
Thanks all
Edit: pretty sure that video didnt work so heres a pic too. |

Bolt looks bent, cover looks cracked through the lug. Should just be the alternator under there though, shouldn't be pressurised, I wouldn't expect air movement in that area.
Might just need a new bolt, the apparent crack could also be a casting flaw. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

That part of the bike took a pretty heavy blow when I came off, so that sounds about right.
I'll drain the oil and change the bolt, hopefully that'll do the job. There is a very definite air pressure, although it's not particularly strong, but maybe that's not such a serious issue then.
Thanks for your help! |
If there's no leak from the crankcase gasket you could do that, perhaps using plain washers and some silicone sealant, but it's a frightful bodge |

At this point the whole bike is a bit of a bodge
but if it works, it works. What you said here is about the best I can do at the moment. Taking it apart should give me a better idea of the damage. I don't think the flange has been recessed into the casing; it was impossible to get a socket on before the damage too, but the coating on the crankcase is cracked and it could be cracked all the way through like you guys said. Bolt could be bent.
Basically the bolt has been dislodged and has left a small gap in its shaft where the oil and air are coming from, as the flange isn't totally flush with the casing. |
