it should be about 100 mpg. the exhaust smells a little bit rich, but i havent up-jetted it or anything. i also adjusted the air screw correctly, until it was running at its best. everything else is standard on the bike apart from a k&n filter and a sports exhaust. what could be the problem?

Are you first owner? If not, someone has probably fiddled with the carb.

Still, to get the fuel burn that bad if you have to be painfully rich or just leaking.

I'm assuming this is some kind of Chinese 125.

Well these are going to compromise economy with dubious benefit to performance.

Your little brother's syphoning your petrol for his moped?

Running with the choke on? (common for people to get the choke on/off positions wrong on CG125 type carbs)

In this very sunny weather, evaporation/expansion can be a problem too. I once had a bike that would empty the tank if you left it in direct sunlight with the fuel on. The fuel in the float bowl expanded with the heat then some trickled out of the overflow, then cooler fuel from the tank ran in and filled it again, it expanded, a little ran out, more replaced it.

Took me ages to notice. I sat and watched it and you'd see the fuel ooze out of the overflow then hear a slight rattle as the needle valve trickled more in then shut. The solution was to turn the fuel off when you parked it.

Mostly this /\

Some Tom Dickery is afoot.

Impossible to say what mpg it should return if the inlet and exhaust has been tamperfered with by A.N. Other the Bike Tuning Nutter.

ok, cool. yeah never been 100% sure about the choke position. i think its up for off and down for on. ive never had a bike where u had to turn the fuel off. what a terrible design... i did fix a problem with the float as it was causing an overflow. i adjusted it correctly until it stopped leaking.

So you adjusted it correctly or you adjusted it until it stopped leaking?

Did you actually measure the float height? If you didn't, you haven't adjusted it correctly, unless by random chance. This may well be the problem.

Regarding fuel taps. I have a great quote someone on another forum got in a letter from Bing carburettors (who make carbs for BMW motorbikes) when he wrote and complained that his bike was dripping petrol occasionally when parked despite having fitted a new needle valve. "We manufacture carburettors, not fuel taps.".

To be brief, traditionally motorcycles have the petrol above the height of the carburettor, the carburettor fills by gravity. Gravity doesn't turn off when you stop the engine so you either need a manual fuel tap or a vacuum operated one to shut off the fuel when not in use. Cars on the other hand use a fuel pump to lift fuel up to the carburettor/injector. When you turn the engine off, you turn the pump off too.

So not such a terrible piece of design really.

"""""" i did fix a problem with the float as it was causing an overflow. i adjusted it correctly until it stopped leaking.""""

It`s very rare that a float causes an overflow, only when is does not float.
Adjusting it correctly until it stopped leaking suggests a float needle valve seating problem, it sounds like you are leaking fuel behind you when riding.

I almost dropped my bike last week at a roundabout.
I thought I'd hit a Diesel spill.
Now I realise I was following the OP's bike. 😯

But it could be carburetting poorly due to an incorrect float height.

At an absolute guess, the sprung pin on your needle valve is stuck in.

anyway ive bought a fuel filter for it as it had one on the original bike, so that might help fuel consumption

Make sure the filter you fitted is compatible with whatever Powerbands have been installed by the O.E.M.
👍

Factory installed powerbands are adjustable. He probably just needs it inspected and tightened to spec.
