Hi

Not sure about this, but someone might be able to confirm / deny it.

From a mailing list I am on:-

Quote:
Apparently it is now illegal to advertise your car for sale on the public highway. I believe this was introduced to discourage street trading, but it is unhelpful to private sellers.

Could be nasty to get done for having a for sale sign on your bike.

All the best

Keith

TBH its kind of a good think as there are loads of garages near me that put their cars for sale in parking spaces and take up loads of room! gits,
But still going to hurt the private seller if its true

I thought those for for sale signs in car windows were illegal quite a while ago... Except I thought it was because it distracted people from the road Laughing

I'm pretty certain that a private individual is allowed to put a 'For Sale' sign in his/her car if they are selling it privately - it's where a car dealer or someone selling multiple vehicles - falls foul of the law. I'm 90% certain your OK putting a sign in your car - just can't find the link or info to confirm.

As far as I know it's been illegal for years to sell a vehicle on the public highway as it's considered an obstruction. If you are driving the vehicle and have a for sale sign on/in it this is legal, it's the parking bit that breaks the law.

Trading standards prosecuted a guy locally to me for selling on the highway a couple of years ago.

What they do at the momemt is plaster warning stickers all of the windows that have a sale notice in them, obscuring the details.

OK, this has been bugging me since my earlier post - it looks like you cannot put a sign in your car saying it is 'for sale' if you live in an area where you need "Consent To Trade". Also there is legislation covering this too notably in Part VIIA of the Highways Act 1980 - this link gives some reasonable answers....

Yet more red tape, requiring expensive public officials to police.

This measure should have been taken against adware, spyware and all the other shit that's perfectly legal to screw up other people's computers with. But no, that would affect big business. Clobber the little guy as usual.

I believe this is about putting for sale sign's in cars. It's because some bloke did a study and there were a couple of accident's when people braked suddenly or weren't looking at the road because of a for sale sign. Can't see it being inforced much though.(unless i'm selling something).

oh sh*t i've done it again,if i get anymore boring somebody shoot me.

I don't know the reasons, but I can confirm this is illegal in london as I received a very unpleasant notice (from the MET) on my car telling me I had 7days to remove the for sale notice or further action would be taken.

I moved the car onto my drive and all was fine. I am not sure that they could prosecute a sign saying "FS 1500" with a phone number, as they would find is difficult to prove it was an ad. I will find out shortly as I am selling my fiesta runabout and have no drive space.
