Hoba VFR 800 Vtec - Low rev rattle/clatter. Cam chain?

Just noticed on my '53 plate VFR that at tickover there is a very percievable tapping noise. Only happens when the revs are low and the bike doesn't feel any different when riding. I was thinking that it might be something like the cam chain tensioner or the chain might've cracked a link or something.

Any thoughts and Ideas? I'd rather dothe fixing myself as the cost of servicing on a VFR is bloody stupid.. Wink

Or more likely, the clutch.

They can get rattly after a period of time, the clutch basket gets notched. My VFR750 sounded like a Ducati before I took the clutch basket off and burred the edges of it straight again.

there aren't any camchains on your VFR, or any chain adjusters

only the big service should be dear as its takes ages to set up the clearances on a VTEC something like £700 is normal

clutch rattle or cam end float, normal VFR noises at tickover

It is common in as little as 35,000km for the cam chain tensioners on your VFR to slack and let the chains rattle. You can re-tension them though. See Video

Difficult one without actually hearing it but when we're the valve clearances last done ?...

A consistent tapping would suggest valve clearances, an audible rattle would suggest cam chain tensioner which aren't particularly reliable on Hondas and is something they should have sorted out years ago but never did for some reason...

Does it make a difference when it's hot or cold, not entirely sure if your particular VFR has a cam chain or is gear driven, some are and some aren't depending on year...
