Hello,

Can someone recommend some inexpensive chain oil please? Or what grade of oil.

I've got wax but in my head it is not getting in the nooks and crannies of the chain.

So I think I'm going to use oil first then wax from now on. I guess the wax will contain the oil.

What do you guys find best?

Thanks.

Manufacturer recommendation is gear oil - it works, it's cheap and plentiful, and there's no reason not to use it.

Everyone must be sleepy today if the word "Scottoiler" isn't in the first reply Wink

Not a fan of waxes at all, whenever I try I just seem to end up with a chain that looks like it's been sporadically covered in Jizz.

I use this stuff, it doesn't fling too much. Sometimes they have it for sale in the Range for a few quid less. https://www.eurocarparts.com/p/wynns-clear-lube-500ml-555770010?type=shopping&gclid=CjwKCAiAv4n9BRA9EiwA30WNDx8KgDn7k5AQEwzpNL79xY36d7ZOjcfBO4Y8zw19XQxyCclu2-ZNfhoCvZ0QAvD_BwE

I just clean my chain with a mix of 3 parts kerosene to 1 part engine oil. Cleans all the crap off and leaves a film of oil behind on the chain.

As above, Scottoilers work well too Wink

I think I'll go for gear oil coated in wax/ptfe thanks. The video just shows how we are being ripped off really.

I use chainsaw lube applied with a Scottoiler, have done for years, it not only lubes the chain it keeps it clean, cheap as chips.

Used engine oil. The challenge being to be on the last drips before the next oil change. Last year I got through all 3 litres. Plenty of fling will keep it clean.

EP90 along the run of the chain before every ride, clean the chain w/ diseasel or wd every 500 miles (or after every ride in rain), and get 50k plus on chain and rear sprocket (front sprocket needs changing 2 or 3 times in that distance).

Scotoiler or PD Oiler would be my first choice. EP90 gear oil is good too.

Don't use used engine oil it'll have acids and other contaminants in it.

Considering that engine oil carries metal 'bits' out of the engine I have to wonder if this is a good idea.

Back when I was a chain drive peasant (about 2 months ago) I would drip a bit of Halfords car oil on the inside run of the chain only, aiming at the x-rings, then run the bike in gear on the centre stand for a few seconds. I did this if it looked dry or after I got in from a rainy ride.

I have never cleaned a chain at all. I was getting around 30-40,000 miles from a chain and sprocket set and would only change them if I had to adjust it more than once every 6 months. This was on FJ1200s,750 Africa Twins (run them looser than Honda say), Varadero 1000 and Versys 1000.

I don't clean the chain these days either. 1 Litre of 90W gear oil is less than £10, is about the same viscosity as clean engine oil and will last for years. I brush it onto the full length of the chain (all sides), then wipe off the excess with a rag. I do this quite infrequently, there's almost no fling and the chain doesn't pick up grit like it did when I used sticky aerosols. Chain and sprockets get changed as a set and do around 40,000 miles.

I don't 'get' Scottoilers (a infrequent drop of oil falling onto one part of a spinning chain? How can that work?) except that it uses gear oil Thumbs Up and owners are likely to be fastidious despite the "fit and forget" claim.

Also acidic from piston blowby contamination and lost a lot of its shear resistance.

It's not like NEW oil is expensive or you need a lot to keep a chain lubed Confused

They work, hence their popularity. Set to drip once a minute, over time the whole chain is going to get its share of fresh oil. It doesn't always fall on the same part you know Razz

Laughing I don't doubt gravity, I do doubt that a dropper hovering above one side of the chain will alone provide complete lubrication. However, if all that's required is to lubricate the the roller/sprocket interface maybe that's enough. I like overall rust protection too though, including the side plates.

I suspect that an unlubricated O-ring chain would last a surprisingly long time. I'm just not prepared to try it!

Well Jimbo they do work , and very well ,these things have been on the market for years.
Some early Jap machines had chain oilers as a standard fitment e.g. Kawasaki H2

This.

Started with the spray on stuff for ease of use, then moved onto gear oil as that's what the manual recommended, then discovered the awesomeness of the scottoiler Thumbs Up
