An acquaintance who was supposed to be paying storage to my brother for a Thundercat and some other household stuff, hasn't been - and it's bee at least 3 years since we've had sight or sound of him. By our reckoning storage fees alone for his garaged sized plot exceed the value of the beleaguered T'cat. (I reckon its about 600 quids worth)

So I'm considering liberating at as a project. I could just get it up and running I guess but is there anything else fun I could do? I'd hate to turn it into another of 'Ebay's most miserable bikes' but I did think trimming some of the fairing back to make it semi-naked might be a plan.

Thoughts?

Removing any part will make it even more worthless. The best way to deal with it is a restoration/recomission. Even then it'll be worth about a grand maximum.

Also, you can't really liberate bikes without the owners permission... We've discussed this before but it's a no-no.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Get it running, clean it up, MOT and sell as is. Like ZZR's, VFR's and CBR's there's always a market for those versatile middleweights. If the mileage isn't stratospheric and you can make it look tidy getting a grand shouldn't be hard.

Can't see much appeal to hacking back the fairings, at least not to then sell. If someone wanted a semi naked like that they'd be buying an FZS.

I'd make sure you do whatever you need to "seize" the bike by the book though, sods law you flog the thing and 2 weeks later the bloke appears crying theft.

Your brother would need to put in a claim with the courts for unpaid rent and the associated rigmarole of seizing goods in lieu of payment.

Anyhoo, looks like too much work for a full transformation over restoration. I'm sure someone would like it as a budget racer.

I wasn't bothered about making money from it - but you're right perhaps I'll just nick the motor and stick it an blown up FZS if I can find one..

I assumed you were trying to make up the loss it caused.

In that case, knobblies, ruin it in a field, park it back where it was and when the bloke appears in another 3 years insist it was like that when he put it there Laughing

Could be interesting - the Cat engine is more powerful than the Fazer's, although supposedly "the same unit" there are significant differences (one being the ram-air, which will need working around if removed).

Thundercats are currently at the bottom of their curve - a grand give or take seems to be the going rate for a road-legal runner unless you have a proper minter. I suspect they may pick up a bit as time goes by but so many have been butchered there are few straight ones left.

I've never seen a 'streetfighter' version done well; they just done seem to suit it. The engines are a decent choice for a project though as they are big on mid-range, so a bike-engined vehicle is an option.

The frame spars are to obtrusive - the best ione I saw turned out to be an FZ750 with T'cat 'running gear' Rolling Eyes
