Hi all,

I'm just looking at adding a battery isolator switch or kill switch to my ride as an anti-theft measure.

I noticed most are either wired to the battery or the ignition wires, but surely the bike can still be started with kickstart?

My question is would it be safe to add an isolator switch to the ignition coil wiring? - if spark plug has no power then the bike won't run no matter how you try to start it, right?

Don't mess with the high tension side of things!

What I'd suggest you look for is an existing kill switch or safety interlock on the bike and wire up an extra hidden switch to that. Whether it needs to be in series or in parallel entirely depends on the model of bike... which you neglected to mention Wink

In the LT wiring yes would work that is how immobilisers work as well as intercepting the feed to the starter relay
as said don't mess with the High Tension side of the coil 15k + volts

So not a good idea to add a switch to either of these wires then?

Very unlikely to have them start it and ride away. Most are just pushed or dragged. Waste of time and added failure point.

Yep, it will just be pushed, spend the money on a extra chain.

Or if you must mess with the electrics then get an immobiliser with a remote key fob, way cooler and no chance of someone seeing where the hidden switch is.

Those wires you used green arrows to are LT 12v or less yes you can switch
It the thick wire to the plug you must not fiddle with it carries 15,000 to 30,000volts you need a switch that is for that voltage
very complex very expensive and very dangerous HT can jump 15mm in dry air !

A well-made home made immobiliser is good but no replacement for locks and chains

Just get an alarm with an immobiliser and vibration/tilt sensors. The alarm I had on my Gixxer was from Scorpio and that had a microwave based motion sensor that would beep as you even got close to the bike and would set the alarm off if you were there too long. Had an FM based remote as well that would go off if you were within about half a mile of the bike too.
