Freeing a seized caliper.

Just seeking some ideas and constructive input please .

I’ve managed to get the front caliper off ‘Project Scrappy Hyosung ‘.
I had to free the hose as the bleed nipple is seized solid, and I don’t want to snap it off.
After much jiggery pockery, I got the caliper mounting bolts to move and was able to remove the bolts without any damage.

The caliper still refused to let go of the disc .
After an hour of swearing, pulling, and much wiggling, it finally let go.

Now comes the really hard part , (for me anyway).
Getting the pistons out of the caliper body??

Any constructive hints, tips, or advice would be very much appreciated

Never had it happen to me personally
so not a job I've had to do luckily

I do recall some one screwing a grease nipple in the bleed hole
capping the union off with a 10mm bolt and using the grease guns pressure to push the piston out.
I've heard of some using compressed air.

Meself, I'd probably end up welding a bar to the presumably fooked pistons
heat the caliper body and yank twist and swear at em.......
( I do like a good swearing)
You can buy internal grabby things for pulling them out but
no idea if they'll do any serious pulling though.

Soaking them in some antirustoprene type jollop first may help

As previously said, the slide.hammer kit is the way to go but if the bleed nipple cannot be undone, why bother?

I have 3 approaches:

1) blast an airline in at high pressure with a rag in the caliper to catch the pistons (dont use your fingers, it hurts)

2) greasegun FTW

3) throw the fucker in the bin and put a different caliper on

Good point on the nipple
if it's seized don't go mad on it
soak in anti yer jollop of choice for a day then start with heat
and moderate back and forth to try and get it to move

If it shears off, its not 100% bad but the job just got worse
and getting the remnant out with fooking the threads gets harder

I've had about a 45% success rate doing these
tacking a nut over a rounded off one worked
vewy vewy carefuwwy drilling with larger and larger bits to
then pick out the remaining thread worked for me once.
And of course, I fucked up a few too.

As Stinkwheek said, grease gun FTW.

Another way I have got things free is to dump it in an utrasonic cleaner for a really good soak. I don't know if it's the cleaner getting the shit out or the vibes freeing it up but it has worked in some cases where I have been on the point of giving up. I do have a biggish ultrasonic bath though.

Sirzed caliper, single piston .

Remove from stiue but don't disconnected hydraulics.

Bucket of very hot water.

Place caliper in water and count to ten then pump a few times, piston moves. Remove from water, lube piston with fluid.

Wood and g clamp, press piston back in, then repeat process. Repeat, repeat, repeat.

When confident piston is freed off, pump piston out.

Multi pistons, clamp off pistons except the one you are freeing. Don't pump out till all are free.

If piston etched or corroded, use grips. If not, don't use grips, use expanding pliers on piston internal wall, the void or saucepan cooking area wall.

For solid piston, excersize till free ( pump and clamp ) then pump out. Some pistons are plastic.

You could use heat gun hair driers...

Small rotary wire brush and drill/Dremel lubed with fluid to clean caliper seal groove and outer " land"..

I have never come across a caliper that fucked, and decent replacements tend to be expensive. Piston could well be pitted beyond use, and new seals are likely needed, but the caliper body is less likely to be fucked.

Lack of bleed nipple isn't a problem. Most of the air will go back up the line to the reservoir, the little pocket left in the caliper isn't going to be a problem when all you need to do is pump out the piston.

So, you fit a nice new seal and piston and you're still left with a calliper you cannot bleed because the the bleed nipple is siezed.

I don't see the point.

got the bleed nipple out of a very crusty brake caliper without destruction taking place ,yay!.

I used the world’s tiniest blow-torch to put some heat on the nipple only and not the caliper.
Then a 8mm six sided socket on the nipple.
Firm but not fierce pressure and lots and lots of knocking.
Voilà Out it came, no damage.

Av yew got a an Android phone boi?

if so, getting pics to your PC is easy
plug a USB cable from phone to to PC
and the phone will often give you options
like charge only or file transfer.

failing that, swipe down after plugging the phone in and you'll of get these options that way.
The phone will then show up on explorer and the pics will be in
typically: Phone name/DCIM/Camera
Copy em to a desktop or other folder then show them to the world!

Igmur is free and easy to use for sticking em up on the interweb
