Hi,

I have a Keeway superlight 125cc and I went to take the bike for the MOT this morning and I heard a horrible noise in the 3rd gear.

it sounded like the chain was gonna come off!

I turned around and cancelled the MOT.

I've put the bike on the center stand and started it and put it in the different gears to see whats going on and where the noise was coming from and I found out that the noise is from somewhere near the small sprocket close to the engine!

This noise gets much louder if im moving the bike but it is still very noticeable even when the bike's stationary and it only happens in the 3rd gear.

Please view the video attached:

https://streamable.com/d8lrwx

The bike doesnt slip out of the gears so this can't be a clutch...

what is the the issue here? and what are my options?

Thanks in advance.

Are there any tight spots on the chain?

Measure how much slack there is In the middle of the chain run with the chain rotated every 6 inches or so. It looks a bit slack to me and seems to jump on the top of the run every time you changed gear.

That is a good point and in all fairness, I noticed a slight slacking especially when I go to 3rd gear.

I'm gonna have to order a new chain and put that on it and test again but I got doubt that a new chain will solve this problem.

And if the new chain doesnt sort out the issue, I probably have to

1- split the engine which I don't have a single clue how to...

2- buy another engine which is gonna be expensive!

Just take the chain off and start the engine. See if it makes the noise

done that now and my fear has become a reality...

I've taken the chain off and put the bike in neutral and when I tried to turn the sprocket with my hand, I can hear grinding/crunching noise AND the most important thing is that it is getting stuck to something inside and it wont spin!

and I noticed it spun once very slowly on its own even though the bike is in neutral!!

Here's the video of it:

https://streamable.com/bf1tbc

does this mean the gears have broken and the pieces of metal getting stuck inside of the box?

They all do that. mine even turns the back wheel in neutral. Put your hand on it and it will stop.

In that case your gearbox is fecked.

I went from neutral to second and then third and fourth and fifth and back down.

I can hear the grinding noise in the fifth as well.

Just put a chain and sprocket set on it - cheap enough from Brooksbarn, Wemoto , or similar. The engine sprocket wears much faster than the big one on the rear , it will be trashed , the chain is worn and stretched and trying to jump off the teeth of the sprocket. 25-30 quid for the parts.

Bit hard to hear over the engine but if it's making noises in certain gears without even a chain then it points to the gearbox Sad

The general state of the bike is not great. Sorry to say but unless this is "a way to pass the time" sorta project you're probably better off throwing it in a skip. The only good news I can give you is it's a pretty generic engine so parts probably not an issue if you do take the engine apart and find, for example, a gear missing a tooth.

On that did you find any bits of metal when you drained the oil?

"The bike doesnt slip out of the gears so this can't be a clutch.."

Wrong I'm afraid, the clutch doesn't keep it in gear it has things called detents to do that
the clutch helps you get into gear

"what is the the issue here? and what are my options?"

I reckon if it were the chain it would be noisy in all the gears
My guess is internal damage to the gear teeth/shafts

If you dont want to strip it and try to find parts to fix it
Its a 157FMI engine so used on quite a few bikes
not just the KY Cowboy
for example:

Sounds like a tooth has disapeared on the third gear. Someone been grinding their gears? Re-build!

Replacing the gearbox sounds like a good learning project if you've never done it before. What you'll learn by doing it is invaluable. A chinese bike that "doesn't matter" is also the ideal candidate for a novice mechanic.

Also, prices of 125's are going up, perhaps due to fuel / oil economy (and increasing size of ULEV zones?). I bought a 125 about two years ago for £500 as a commuter, it's worth double that now.

Get a Haynes manual for your equivalent engine. If it's a 157FMI then it's some kind of Honda CG clone. (Some modern CG's have a camchain in I think due to Euro emissions BS - so a CG in name only - part of the CG appeal was getting rid of the camchain) There's also plenty of youtube video's out there of stripping / refurbishing these small engines.

Take a video / pictures of the job as you take the engine apart and put each part in order in a row on cardboard with notes so you can see the order they came out of the engine, then reverse that process as you put the engine back together.

If it was me I'd not be throwing money at that - I would take a punt on a cheap bottom end (e.g. this one for £40) and a gasket set (about £20) and make one working motor out of what you have.

Replacing a gearbox on a bike isn't really a first mechanicing experience, it's a fucking nightmare to do.

Taking an entire engine apart will require tools that aren't in your standard £25 halfords toolset. Just taking the flywheel off is going to require pullers and shit that a novice won't have and also won't even consider buying.

Just get another known working engine.
