Posted: 12:45 - 17 Mar 2022 Post subject: Keeway Superlight 125cc makes a horrible noise when in third |
 |
|
Hi,
I have a Keeway superlight 125cc and I went to take the bike for the MOT this morning and I heard a horrible noise in the 3rd gear.
it sounded like the chain was gonna come off!
I turned around and cancelled the MOT.
I've put the bike on the center stand and started it and put it in the different gears to see whats going on and where the noise was coming from and I found out that the noise is from somewhere near the small sprocket close to the engine!
This noise gets much louder if im moving the bike but it is still very noticeable even when the bike's stationary and it only happens in the 3rd gear.
Please view the video attached:
https://streamable.com/d8lrwx
The bike doesnt slip out of the gears so this can't be a clutch...
what is the the issue here? and what are my options?
Thanks in advance. |

Just put a chain and sprocket set on it - cheap enough from Brooksbarn, Wemoto , or similar. The engine sprocket wears much faster than the big one on the rear , it will be trashed , the chain is worn and stretched and trying to jump off the teeth of the sprocket. 25-30 quid for the parts. ____________________ All the above is my personal opinion, you can see my lips move, but I'm talking out of my arse.
I've been riding, and fixing , bikes for 50 years, in that time the more I learn, the less I am absolutely sure of..... |

Bit hard to hear over the engine but if it's making noises in certain gears without even a chain then it points to the gearbox
The general state of the bike is not great. Sorry to say but unless this is "a way to pass the time" sorta project you're probably better off throwing it in a skip. The only good news I can give you is it's a pretty generic engine so parts probably not an issue if you do take the engine apart and find, for example, a gear missing a tooth.
On that did you find any bits of metal when you drained the oil? ____________________ Royal Enfield Continental GT 535, Husqvarna Vitpilen 401, Yamaha XSR700, Honda Rebel, Yamaha DT175, Suzuki SV650 (loan) Fazer 600, Keeway Superlight 125, 50cc turd scooter |

"The bike doesnt slip out of the gears so this can't be a clutch.."
Wrong I'm afraid, the clutch doesn't keep it in gear it has things called detents to do that
the clutch helps you get into gear
"what is the the issue here? and what are my options?"
I reckon if it were the chain it would be noisy in all the gears
My guess is internal damage to the gear teeth/shafts
If you dont want to strip it and try to find parts to fix it
Its a 157FMI engine so used on quite a few bikes
not just the KY Cowboy

Sounds like a tooth has disapeared on the third gear. Someone been grinding their gears? Re-build! ____________________ CBT: 12/06/10, Theory: 22/09/10, Module 1: 09/11/10, Module 2: 19/01/11

If it was me I'd not be throwing money at that - I would take a punt on a cheap bottom end (e.g. this one for £40) and a gasket set (about £20) and make one working motor out of what you have. |
