Have you considered other bikes too? I think the KTM Duke 390 looks like a perfect commuter bike. Small enough capacity to get decent miles-per-gallon yet large enough to still happily break motorway speed limits. Light enough to be fun in the corners and popular enough to have a large aftermarket range of parts and accessories. It's also not that much more expensive than the Royal Enfield and KTM are doing 0% APR finance on them right now.

I am not a KTM salesman I promise.

I might have got it mixed up but I'm pretty sure the Duke 390 has an abysmal reputation for reliability or build quality.

https://youtu.be/qbsBKfdw480
I watched this Meteor350 vs CB350 comparison video in India now.
I was thinking CB350 was faster in acceleration and didn't know much.
He was saying Meteor has better soft suspension which fit Indian road, soft wide deep seat. Both can keep 110km(68mph) constant. CB has no vibration, Meteor has slight vibration. Meteor sound is not so loud less Royal Enfield ish sound but sound good.
Watching this video, Meteor looks better for comfy commuting in my opinion. It has more cruiser ish style than CB but it's pegs are not too forward control, this is very important for comfy commuting cause it will avoid your buttock aching.

p.s. They were acceleration comparison too.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6FBzOyt9wjw&t=90s
He says CB has too high 4 & 5 gearing.

Really? I thought it was the bigger KTMs that people said were not worth the money as build quality and finish wasn't what you'd expect for the price.

To be completely honest, I have only ever known one person who has a KTM Duke 390 in the flesh and it was a guy I just spoke to in a car park as we parked close together and he said it was a fantastic machine. I've seen a couple others out and about in Glasgow but I think that's probably because there is a KTM dealership in the area.

It's a bike that I would give serious consideration to. I am so adrift on what to do with bikes now. I want something that I can get good economy on and is still fun but not all that expensive and something else that is more expensive but for fair weather riding only and living in a garage most of the year.

Considerations for commuter bike:

BMW G 310 R (or G 310 GS),
Honda CB300R,
KTM Duke 390,
Royal Enfield Meteor 350 Supernova.

Considerations for fair weather big bike:

Ducati SuperSport 950,
Suzuki GSX-S1000 GT,
Suzuki Katana,
Yamaha MT-09 SP,
Yamaha Tracer 9 GT.

I’m not sure what’s going on with my posts on this thread, it says I was the last poster but I can’t see it. Can’t remember what is said now.

I went for the Meteor in the end, price was too tempting and the more I thought about it (and the more the price of petrol went up) it just made more sense for me and my use case.

I got a fireball one in red, picked it up on Tuesday because they had it in stock. Insurance is buttons, it will allegedly do 100mpg and it is an absolute hoot.

I don’t like the look of the screen or sissy bar so I’m happy with the fireball, might take the stripes off the wheels, not sure yet. I might get the tank wrapped in gloss black for the full murdered out look. I love the heel shifter too.

I’m actually looking forward to riding it, which I never was with the Er6 I’m actually looking forward to going into work tomorrow just so I can have a ride, might go for a ride out at lunchtime too just because I can, I’ve got to get it run in anyway so might as well go for an ice cream over Cannock Chase instead of sitting around the office.

You do know the heel shift is so it can be ridden by someone with flip-flops.

Unlike the ER6 which has a throttle designed for someone with testicles....

Hope you get a lot of enjoyment out of it mate, post up pics of it and all the best

Why would you assume I have testicles?

Heel shift means I don’t get my Yeezys scuffed up.

On the contrary, I'm assuming and implying you don't.

Petalbriefs had bigger testicles than half the men on here and she was most definately not born with them...

For what you want I would get an SH300i. If, as you suggest, a decent one costs more than a new Enfield then set that against the number of breakdowns you won't experience on the Honda.

Do invest in security, though, as - unlike the Enfield - scrotes will try to nick it.

Nothing like the feeling of getting a new bike. The Enfield looks braw. Go for it.

I learned on an ER6, and it had a very twitchy throttle, learned to control it in the end but i wouldnt want to own one, it seemed different from one lesson to the next

If you look forward to riding the new bike, its job done, everyone has their opinions on various bikes but you should always want to ride it

Put about 100 miles on the Enfield now, would happily ride it to the coast tomorrow if I had time. Wouldn’t have fancied it on the ER6.

It’s definitely more my type of thing, I basically rushed in and bought the wrong bike with the ER6, excitement got the better of my when I passed my test. It was a shitter, I could have fixed it up, but it would have kept costing me and at the end of the day I’d still have a old battered bike with surface rust on the frame and iffy electrics.

My favourite thing is that I’ve done 100 miles and not only is the fuel light not on, I’ve got more than half a tank left, that’s keeping the CFO happy too.

I'm glad you got something you're really happy with now. Personally, I really like my ER6-F. I've not been kind to it at all - I have looped it once, dropped it once (no damage that time) and it's blown over by the wind one time and knocked over by some cunt in a van. She is an old girl at 13 years old and I might be the owner that puts the bullet in her.

She has served me well and my time with her is coming to an end, not because of the bike but because I want something nicer, newer and faster to fucking hoon about on.

The same with my little 125 - she has served me well despite people mocking her for being Chinese - I've put thousands of miles on it in all weathers and it's never failed, but her time with me is coming to an end too as I look for something in the 300 - 500cc range for putting my moon miles on and keeping the nice, new litre bike for fair weather summer days only.

Might not be this season but next season they will absolutely be replaced.

Shiny Nice bike! I hope you enjoy yours! Owning type of bike you prefer is more important. I changed from LS125R to W650 for similar reason. I noticed I prefer upright position after buying LS125R. W and Meteor seems to have similar position and engine plus sound.
Please keep your bike with safety items.

It’s surprisingly proper sized. I think the seat height is higher than the Rebel, no doubt significantly slower though, but it’s a willing little thing.

Worst part is trying to find an excuse to go out on it when I’m working from home.

The fuel light comes on way too early, if you fill up when it does you'll only get around 10 litres in.

These do look really cool but personally I'd have opted for a used Rebel, W800 or a Bonnie, but saying that you'd have to be looking at something around 10 years old to get one at that price point.

£3,500 could have got you a 2020 CB300 Thinking

Either way, I hope you really enjoy your purchase, seems like you are already, nothing beats the experience of buying a brand new vehicle. And with a three year warranty I guess you can't really go wrong really, maybe trade it in when the warranty runs if it's becoming unreliable or if you fancy a change.

Yeah the warranty (and finance at the moment) we’re the main draws. Plus the ER6 was not running and was already at the Enfield dealers so I would have had to paid £600 to get that fixed so I could have sold or PXd that.

The plan is to chop it in for something else when the warranty is up, but we’ll see when the time comes. The lack of power suits the style of the bike and as it’s just basic utility transport the fuel economy suits my needs better than MOAR POWER would too. I’ve not missed the power yet and it’s still running in so I’ve not been using full throttle.

It’s won me over on cruisers though, a Bobber Black has leapt to near the top of my dream bikes list.
