Hi guys, most of you know I failed my test the other day, but I think its good because I'm starting to have second thoughts about which bike to get.

I want to be able to do sunday runs and trackdays etc. The cbr is a 600 so the tax will be £15 cheaper. But I'm not sure what the insurance will be like compared between a 2000 onwards cbr compared to a 2004 model sv650s.

Any suggestions?
Oh and my girlfriend prefers the cbr cos it has fairings.

CBR600 is a group 14, SV650 is a group 9 and SV650S is a group 10. I would have thought the insurance for a CBR would be higher than an SV, best thing to do is do a few quotes and see.

Insurance is gonna be your main decider IMO - both are ample for sunday twatting and trackdays, running costs of the CBR might be a bit higher though not hugely... CBR is considered to be better build quality.

For a 'just passed test' person, insurance is going to be the shagger so I'd go SV.

Suppose the real difference would be in servicing costs (or complexity if you do your own)

SV, V-twin... once you've had one you probably won't want anything else... (but then inline4 owners would say the same)

Both great bikes, i'm sure whichever you get your not gonna be dissapointed..

Was looking in to a CBR600 and sv650 myself.

The earliest models that are nice IMO are the 1999 CBR600F4. Any earlier models have mank side fairing.
Also have heard the early injected models are not so great thats 2000+ I believe.
Top build quality and are good for pretty much everything including touring.
For a good 99 f4 you'd be looking at around 3.5k.

Didn't look so much in to the sv but it's a twin so if you like that sort of thing there's not much else in it. Would go for the older frame style since again IMO there nicer and will be alot cheaper now due to new style.

I believe the 99 model CBR600F is the CBR600FX not the F4.

Heres the Full size photo as a download - its quite big which is why i guess it didn't compress to well above:

All of the extras shown in the photo are Suzuki parts https://www.suzuki-gb.co.uk/access.asp?m=24&l= So any dealer should be able to get them. As far as I can tell, this particular bike has the following fitted:

Lower fairing kit
Crash bungs
Rear Hugger
Gel Seat
Pillion seat cover (removes grab rail)

The 99 onwards have the US designation F4 - it's the ally framed version.

In the UK the 99 is the FX, the 00 is the FY, they both have carbs. 2001 it started being injected and they ran out of alphabet.

the CBR is definately the winning bike if you put spec sheets on the table. The price gap between a new CBR vs a new SV is humongous...
If you don't mind the price, you'd be better off with the CBR.

Do consider the character of a V-twin. Its a feature you can't neglect. Put an afermarket can on a cbr, it'll scream, put an aftermarket can on the sv, it'll roar. Wink

Personally, I'd go for the sv, mainly because of the charm of a v-twin and the interesting pricing.
I don't think the SV will be able to hold its own on a track without some serious tinkering, though...

I know this is nothing to do with the guys question, but i wanna say that, that is the first time ive seen an SV with a fairing, and i never used to be a fan of the looks of the SV, but that one looks awesome, and if you squint, you could confuse it (slightly) for an R1.
Anyone else agree, or should i stop talking and leave?

SV has more character, sounds lovely (if you like it anyway) and is a generally nice to ride bike... so is the CBR.. I'd swap my SV for a 600f4i any day but not for just a cbr600f older one.. Both good bikes, get test rides and make yer mind up! Click my signature link to see my SV Cool

No, I agree Thumbs Up, I really want a supersports, but insurance provents me from getting one (shouldn't have gone so fast around that bend in my car Sad ). I wasn't going to consider getting an SV either until I found out you can totally change its appearance!!

I'd go for the SV650 myself. They sound better than any inline 4 600cc bike IMO (with a race can obviously).

I was watching the trackday for a little bit that was on the Wednesday before the first BSB race at Brands. One of the guys that was in an average paced group was on a fully faired SV650s and harassing a fairly quick 999 (it also sounded ALOT better than the standard Duc can). So basically the SV650 will go as fast you can around corners. It's just the 100mph+ where it looses out in everyday stuff to the CBR. The CBR will probably be better/more comfy for a pillion though.
