Just been for a blat on the bike, and it's reached that time of year. Now don't get me wrong - I would never tell someone what to wear whilst riding a bike but it still surprises me when I see people out (and it's normally on sports bikes, it has to be said) wearing clothing that offers no protection. I've just seen a bloke on a GSXR600 wearing jeans (not so bad), trainers, t-shirt and a helmet. No jacket, no gloves. Worst once I ever saw was a BMW rider on the M40 wearing just a helmet, shorts and flipflops! Shocked

We've all ridden push bikes and I guess most of us have falled off those. I battered myself to bits when I was at school on them, and I knocked myself out once by going over the handlebars. You only have to fall off a push bike at 10-15mph and you'll carve up your legs, arms, hands etc. So, you can at least expect the same on a motorbike... at 10-15mph. But what about 30mph... or 50mph or 80mph etc.

Like I said, if people want to ride bikes at 90mph in a t-shirt then I can't do anything to stop them, and I wouldn't want to. The last thing we need is more legislation, but it does strike me as somewhat mad that people do it. Does it stop hurting if you're hot? Does it make you bounce off the ground? Laughing

Let people do it. Doesn't mean you can't judge them like this though, its silly but its a free choice.

More risk makes the ride feel faster.

I've ridden in just a T-shirt before, on the way to the supermarket while at BdB if I remember correctly.

It was just too damn hot for full leathers.

TBH today i have been guilty of it, was doing some work on the bike, went out to warm her up, without my trousers and boots. round town wasn't to bad but then at 70 on country lanes i did sunddenly realisr what i was doing! came back very cautiously!
Think that the law should stay the way that is as so much crap would be involved with clothing and legislation, should be upto the rider, but when someone comes off in no protections there families think that biking even more dangerous, cause of the injuries that there love one has due to not wearing the proper gear!

I always wear my protective gear, be it full leathers or acrylic.

Whats worse is the bikers in full gear with the near naked pillions, do they think that because the pillion doesnt ride everyday they dont need the same protection.

The summer riders that concern me more are the ones like those I encountered last weekend. The were to a man wearing full race leathers and all the latest kit.

They were also riding like tw@s. I was giving it big beans through the twisties on my supermoto, now when I am on a mission, I use the full road and that means offsiding (riding in the right hand lane) into left handers to the full extent of the visibility on the road.

When someone passes me on the outside just after I have turned in because there is a blind crest coming up, believe me that they cannot possibly have any idea if there is something coming. My bike sits a LOT higher than a sports bike and if I can't see, banzai-billy certainly can't.

I don't care what sort of protective gear you are wearing. If you have a head-on at a combined 150mph, you are dead.

"All the gear and no idea"

Thumbs Up agree just because they dress like a motoGP rider, they seem to think they are one!

I encountered some like that last weekend as I was heading into wrexham, really twisty road and I was stuck behind a bus, so I sat behind it waiting for a chance to overtake.

Sure enough a litlle straight popped up and I went for it, as I'm half way past it suddenly I get over taken by an 04 R1, on its back wheel literally cm's away from me. If he had messed up I would've had nowhere to go apart from whack on the brakes even though I knew I had a few more litre bikes right behind me.

He could've waited half a second and passed me safely but because he has the latest litre bike hes obviously way too good to be sitting behind me. Rolling Eyes

Class A prick I tell thee.

I always wear full kit. I can see why other people wouldn't though. Next time you're wearing all your gear, think about how much protection it actually offers on an average road. On a track, yea, leathers will let you slide almost uninjured. On the road, they won't help as you bounce of curbs, lamp posts, cars etc. The kit will hold the pieces together after an accident, but its only really useful for avoiding abrasive injuries.

Kind of scared me when I thought about it the other day and I realised how little protection you have even when wearing full leather. Compare your knox armor and few mils of leather to the tons of metal and concrete you're hitting.

Absolutely. Your gear's there to help protect you if you fall off, not act as in invincibility hack! Laughing

Depends how you come off. I know someone who binned his CBR whilst wearing a full set of Alpinestars leathers. He walked away with no injuries other than the usual aches and pains, and a nice set of bruising around where the armour sat across his shoulders and elbows. He reckons that without the armour he'd have broken bones. That's not to say that it would have helped him if he'd slid into a lamp post, but you only have to look at people taking massive impacts from highsiding (and getting up) to see that armour helps. As with my above comment though, it doesn't turn you into Captain Scarlett!

I still think my armor saved my knees in my accident last year. I'm not saying the stuff is useless, just not always as life saving as people seem to make out. Has there been much research to compare accidents with and without armor? I've always wanted to know what would have happened if I was only wearing jeans.

Staying on the bike is the best bet Thumbs Up It's all a question of risk vs reward. For new bikers the risk is too high to not wear full kit really. Whilst for an experienced biker maybe the risk isn't too bad compared to the "wind through your hair" reward.

Difficult to get your knee down with stabilisers on the bike though! Laughing

I know what you mean, but you can never account for diesel spills, kamakizee animals, dozy Volvo drivers at junctions etc.

You can allow for and anticipate them though.

I do have the opinion that Summer riders do spoil the fun for the rest of the fun for other bikers just because they jump from there cars into their bikes and leave all sense at home and endanger other motorist's lives.
So the chances of me beening on the other end of these summer riders is minimal so I am not really considering it that much however it does increase statistics which changes laws which affects biking. Maybe that is an extreme view and stating that someone's life is just a statistic but I want to guard my hobby and transport that makes a smile on my face all year round with a cattle prod and a big dog Laughing

I've never ridden any more than about 3 miles from home without my jacket and gloves at least. But as my dad says it doesn't take a long road to fall off.

Mmm, just like the French bike police? Open face lids, boots, gloves and short slieved shirts.

If you crash then you have a problem. Full leathers, etc, might reduce the injuries. The real solution is not to crash.

All the best

I've seen that all too often, the rider in full leathers with his tart on the back with a loose top and a micro-skirt and high heels.

Women on scooters gets me, they spend a fortune on the scooter and jacket but ride around in a skirt and high heels.

Did the crash affect your English skills. Laughing

Last summer, I will put my hand up and openly admit that I did ride around in a hoodie. Simply because I was a 16 year old and had just got my moped.

I never had an off with just the hoodie on though. Very Happy

This summer I Should be in a car with the chick by my side Cool as I cant take her on the bike yet. (Damn hel"L" plates.)

But if I do go for the blast, I will certainly wear atleast my moto X gear which is light but cool...
