While I would love to own an out and out sports hooligan bike like the Blade or the R1, I just can't bring myself to give up the comfort and touring ability of the Blackbird.
Seems to me that there is a market for a radical spots bike that is also comfortable, has a decent tank range and (at a push) could carry luggage enough for a camping trip.
Surely these things aren't mutually exclusive?

All you need is a sports rack and a set of renthal dragbars. Both of these bikes went on the same run I did at the weekend. The R1 came out on the camping run the weekend before complete with tent and cooking equipment.

It is probably a generic one? M&P sell a fair few different types of brackets and lights.

New Sprint ST?? - Its supposed to be pretty sporty for a sports-tourer. Seems they even make a 'not for road use' exhaust system for it!

Most of these folks have been to the Faro rally in Portugal on similar bikes.

I suppose the only others I can think of are the GPZ900 and the ZZR1100 both of which aren't regarded as top of the range these days, they are still bloody fast bikes and were hooligan bikes in their day.

No sign of the MZ yet, which I reckon means it is gone for good. Called the insurance today so it looks like I will be going bike shopping shortly.

Pisses me off a bit because that MZ was my treat to myself after working for 12 months on the foot and mouth outbreak but at least it was properly insured.

I am tempted to streetfighter my GPZ500s and ride that for a while until the right bike makes itself known.

Why cant they take a GSXR1000 and redesign the peg positions to make it more comfy, enlarge the tank 20%?

Change nothing else though!

Any reason this cant be done?

Because people who ride a bike with that sort of enigne expect the chassis to handle in a very focussed way, which requires your weight to be over the front. And if someone wanted a more relaxed cruising position they would probably prefer an engine that doesnt kick in so hard and mentally.

Isnt the new R1 meant to have this comfort now?

VFR 800's are gutless compared to my blackbird...and now Honda have fooked them with Z-tec you can keep them. My Brid is fast as i'd ever want to go but not the easiest machine to throw about in the twisties. Still, For what it gives me I wouldn't change it unless someone made something lighter, turns in quicker, with even more bonkers on acceleration........but still gives 160 mile tank range and doesn't cripple me after 100 miles.

Not being biased in any way cosa I have one but the bike you describe is the thundercat, well for the 600cc range or maybe the thunderace!
The cat has the sports bike appeal the sports bike power and performance although with a more sports tourer seating position and can take panniers easy! also I got 200 miles from the tank the other day , well ok 170 before the light came on then 30 on the reserve. can't complain really.

ahem, Fazer1000, or even a hayabusa, you can get rear pod boxes for them which increase aerodynamics. you don't need to nail either of them to get fast so you can make a tank last a fair while. fit some sporty tyres to either and that'l increase handling abilities and your away.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Blackbird and the busa are about the most confortable performance bikes with a good tank range and paniers available.
I found that new 1200 BMW to be like sitting in an arm chair! Laughing

Thanks Wave2k, I never thought anyone would ever say it! Whoo! (Though I'm not sure I like that 30+ bit) They also carry a fair bit (pic of me after being at superbikes this year), I had a large ruck sack on as well.

I would not call them gutless, just licence friendly..... (bet you never heard that one before Smile )
Besides I see little point on UK roads, there is not enough room to make the most of any extra power. I have yet to be left behind by anyone, more useful to have good forward planning, providing you intend to ride on the road mostly.

That said I probably will look to the blackbird at some point, old age and what not Very Happy
