I've often thought the turning force on the bar clamps must be huge with this style of bar; it's essentially a massive lever. I'd imagine the torque you'd have to do the clamps up to would be massive to resist turning (tube crush risk?!), especially as you're effectively doing the monkey bars as you're riding along. ____________________ TG. |

If you're loading the bars up on either of those, you're doing it wrong |
In an emergency braking situation, you could be going at any speed. The first brake you engage is the front brake. This, immediately followed by the rear brake. Then, optionally, engine braking. The fact you engage the front brake first means that the bars WILL load up. Regardless of whether you use progressive pressure. The forks will depress, which means the front end loads up.
I don't ride ABS bikes, I've never owned an ABS bike, and emergency braking is a basic, essential skill... |
You're confusing loading the front end suspension up, with putting weight through the handlebars. You shouldn't be putting pressure from your body weight through your arms pressing down on the bars - you grip the tank with your legs. ABS has fuck all to do with it. ____________________ DILLIGAF |

1) Gripping the tank with your legs is an extra step and isn't the priority when carrying out an emergency braking procedure. It's bullshit. |
It should be your PRIMARY step so you're not loading the bars up with your weight.

2) ABS has a lot to do with it because it lets you get away with bad habits. You can be ham-fisted and get away with it. |
Again, ABS has NOTHING to do with gripping the tank. You (ok maybe not you) do the same on a bike with or without ABS.

So you ride tractors then?
| Bhud wrote: | You may be unaware that if you carry out an emergency brake procedure clumsily on an old (70s or 80s), you risk falling off the bike because the front wheel will lock up. Your only concern is timing the rear wheel brake when the forks go down as you apply progressive pressure to the front brake. |
You may be unaware that more modern bikes don't have ABS either. I've literally never owned a bike with ABS (had plenty of OEM loaners with it though so have a good amount of experience with them). End of the day, you still ride as if it doesn't have ABS - it's not a replacement for proper technique.
You seem to be arguing a totally different fucking point than I'm making here If you want to hold onto the handlebars til your knuckles are white, then feel free. I'll carry on doing it the same way I've been doing it for the last 2 decades which is loose on the bars and gripping the tank with my legs
Edit to add:
