If you are going from one systgem to a completely new system like I did (BT landline to city fibre) you just make sure there is an overlap between the one coming on line and the other going off. I had 10 days with both systems up and runnning. I had to do it all myself, the auto changing of ISP's only works if the incoming and outgoing ISP's are running on the same system, eg BT openreach.

At least that was what I was told.

Oh, OK - thanks. That's not a problem then; I thought (from ancient memory having done this back in the dark ages!) that there was a code which got passed from one supplier to the other enabling one to switch over to the other (or not, being the more likely) as it wasn't possible to have more than one on the go at once! I don't use any VirginMedia email etc, so it really shouldn't be too painful to the make the change.

Crazy system as round here I'm 100% happy with the VM service apart from the end-of-contract tango...

Changing providers but reusing the same line is where it gets sticky.

Even that's no biggie: buy a router with PAYG 4G/5G SIM to cover any transition downtime.

That solution is dependent on signal strength, I had to put an external antenna up for mine. If you can use your phone indoors though then it should be fine.

i quite often connect my mobile phone to the pc, to use the internet. as long as your phone has an half decent signal, it works quite well.

My works prefers.that I don't use my personal phone as a hot spot for my laptop, presumably because 4g can have a poisoned antenna set up nearby and my phone will just go for the strongest signal.

It's incredibly straightforward and hassle free in my experience; existing phone and internet works fine in the evening when you go to bed and the next day you plug the stuff in from your new ISP and away you go.

I change ISP every 12 or 18 months, I don't understand why people bother trying to get their existing ISP to match what deals are available elsewhere. I'm getting ~76Mb fibre for just over £15 a month.

Like with insurance, there's no reason for customers to have any brand loyalty so if a better deal is available elsewhere, the thing to do is to just go with that better deal. Your existing ISP doesn't give a fuck about you so you shouldn't give a fuck about dumping them.

you can run a man inthe middel attack on any wifi conection be it 3g 4g ,next doors router or our employers wifi

if there that worryed they should only conect via earthnet on a closed section /zone of the network


That depends on how securely the endpoint is configured. I know that a mitm attack would be nigh impossible on one of our laptops or phones. You certainly wouldn't be able to impersonate one of our APs.

A decent end to end VPN is all that's needed to mitigate that particular risk.

Depending on your area the only copper running to your house might be a choice between Virgin Media and Open Reach. Changing from VM to Sky would be no bother (and could easily be run concurrently) but what about going from BT to Sky?

Why would switching ISP from BT to Sky be a problem? Line rental is packaged with the broadband connection, gone are the days of paying line rental to one company for the phone line and paying a different company for the internet connection which uses the phone line.

Both Sky and BT pay to use the Openreach network, one day your service would be with BT and the next it would be with Sky.

It's crazy that people don't switch to get themselves a better deal.

If you want to keep your phone number the old Open Reach supplier (e.g. BT) has to hand that off to the new one (e.g. Sky) and that should work flawlessly.

When it doesn't then it's weeks or even months of pointless phone calls revolving around "computer says no."

Well in my case the only line in to my house is VirginMedia's; not to say I couldn't get another one installed by BT or whatever, but until this year the speed available on the competition in this area has been utterly dreadful (in fact it fell below the threshold which would have been permitted by my other half's employer to let her work from home). A whole different proposition to switching utility suppliers, as I've done for decades.

Anyway, not any more.

EDIT: Well that was interesting.
VirginMedia have been charging me £28 for 132Mb for the last 18 months; I've been happy with that; their service and infrastructure round here is actually very good. Am now out of contract, and it went straight up to £56. I phoned to cancel just now and the above-mentioned "Billy Bangladesh" immediately offered me £36. "No thanks". Billy went off but came straight back offering me... £28. Which I accepted. Didn't even need to get put through to Retentions! I hung up the phone 8 minutes after phoning. Some kind of record!

I do wonder whether this happened as a direct result of realistic competition for their service being available in my area.

Cos they're happy with their ISP. I've had pretty awful experiences with regular outages, and slow as fuck speeds even with the big boys, so I'd rather stay with an ISP I'm happy with.

The problem is they like doing regular price increases, and sometimes penalise people out of contract with an even bigger increase, to try and bully you into taking out a new contract.

That's the bit that grinds my gears and forces me to leave.

First service day for the MT-10 so of course it's blowing a gale and pissing down. I am far from impressed that
my lovely new bike has had to get wet, I don't do rain. It will need a wash by the time I get it home even after the
wash done as part of the service. Got a 22 plated V-Strom 1050 as a courtesy bike. My first ride of a big adventure
style bike, was very comfortable I must say, felt like a big sofa on wheels. But even as an owner of a notoriously
ugly bike myself, it's a proper munter. Also annoyed that I had to put a fivers worth of petrol in it on the way home
because the fuel light was flashing right from the get go. They can deduct that from the cost of the service. I kept
the receipt.

It would be really interesting to know companies break even point. You are connected, have a router already and there is absolutly no outlay for a compny to have to cover. When I phoned up to cancel BT and they asked why, I said what they charged was a rip off they immediatly said we can help you save on that. Rolling Eyes

I really really hate this 3.x% plus CPI they all seem to invoke each year as well. Well not all because my ISP is only a years contract but will have to see what happens when that finishes.
