Hi,

I’m fairly new to biking and have bought myself an old Kawasaki ZZR600 (1997).

I’ve put my first 400 miles on it and it’s running smoothly, however I’ve come across some blue/green fluid strung across the rear wheel arch. (See pictures).

I can’t see where this is coming from, but it’s worrying as looks like quite a lot has been lost. Doesn’t smell of anything and isn’t exactly oily to touch.

Hoping someone can help!

Thanks,

Ben

The first thing I think of with that colour (and not oily) would be coolant. From what I see of that model of bike the expansion tank is around the seat area (under a fairing) and the overflow is routed roughly above where you see the liquid collecting.

I'd suggest either the coolant has been overfilled or you're having some overheating issues and the coolant is boiling.

Thanks. Not had any overheating issues so I'll take a look at the coolant levels.

Or the radiator cap spring is crapping out, allowing some flow into the expansion bottle causing it to overflow.

Coolant tastes sweet. Up to you if you want to risk tasting it...

Coolant can also be very slippy if it gets on your tyre which is why they run race bikes with water in.

Could also be tyre slime, that's green colured? If the tyre has been pre-treated with slime puncture prevention gloop and has a hole in it, some of the stuff can fling out before it seals.

Whatever it is, it's on your fender and on your swingarm. It's something you ran over, not leaking from your bike. Don't worry about it.

My similar era Kawasaki has an overflow tube sticking out beneath the tail unit. It spat green coolant onto the road one summer in town when the radiator fan switch stopped working. Look for the same tube on yours.

Edit: in fact, what’s that running down the back of the battery box? Is it coolant leakage getting sucked forward by the airflow behind the engine and depositing on top of the swingarm?

Thank you everyone for your help. The cause has been found!

The rear wheel had been previously plugged and is spewing out tyre slime when at speed. So, time for a new rear tyre, however annoying with the amount of tread left.

Ps. Like coolant, tyre slime also tastes sweet Embarassed I should've checked that my coolant colour was red before testing this theory

you could always buy a repair kit and plug the puncture yourself.

It's puncture safe tyre sealant, h=you have a hole in your tyre that it may have sealed up.
