Jeez Louise, it's a lot of working stripping down a modern EFI bike. All the fasteners were either barely hand tight or welded in place by corrosion. Sheared off a few rad mount bolts - easy to drill out and replace - but the worst was the bottom engine mount bolt. We tried the usual heat + hammer the ever-living crap out of it but it wouldn't budge. We gave up and cut the ends of the bolt off
The plan is to take the top end apart for scrutiny (it has near zero compression.) Hmm... while disassembling the bike we noticed a lovely high flow K&N air filter and a straight-thru exhaust I doubt it's ever been retuned so I'm guessing hole in piston.
An engine rebuild if it's practical or a second-hand replacement otherwise. After that I'd say stock air filter + stock exhaust otherwise it'll just blow itself up again. |
Just curious, why would an air filter and an exhaust blow a hole in the piston? Too much air flow meaning there is too much compression in the cyclinder and it damages things? I would have assumed that a 125 was so under-stressed that you could do almost anything to it and still have an engine that was... well, understressed? ____________________ 1991 RD04 |

^^ Wot 'e said
On top of that you have an engine most likely run with insufficient coolant and/or oil and ragged to hell and back.
It's a sorry looking thing. If I saw a fleck of rust on my chain I'd feel very guilty, give it a clean and re-oil. This 125 the whole chain is a brighter shade of orange than David Dickinson Oh! the wilful ignorance of youth ____________________ Husqvarna Vitpilen 401, Yamaha XSR700, Honda Rebel, Yamaha DT175, Suzuki SV650 (loan) Fazer 600, Keeway Superlight 125, 50cc turd scooter |

If it's a 4T I'll go for burnt exhaust valve, in this sweepstake, if the compression has gone. ____________________ Now: A100, GT250A, XJ598, FZ750

I just started my rebuilt engine (every nut and bolt came apart) and it works!
I don't know why, but I had my doubts. Still have to torque up the bolts to the frame, put the brake lever and front footpegs back on, and a couple of other bits and pieces. |

I discussed the Suzuki with its mechanic and apparently he thinks it needs to have the stator replaced.
But it might be something else.

When the engine is running, the battery is draining. When it stops running, the battery starts to recharge again.
But two out of three (somethings ... ?voltages?) are very low (3 and 4) whereas the third is 12(v, I think)
That's what [I think] he explained to me
Might be a bit of wiring, or the reg-rec but he's starting with replacing the stator and see where that takes us.
Meh. ____________________ Not nearly as interesting in real life. |

It's a Suzuki GSX - it;ll be the reg/rec. They are well known for it.
The stator is easy to check, all three phases should be putting out the same about 60-70volts AC at 5k revs. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

Well I picked the Suzuki up, chatted with a few old coots whilst waiting for the MOT, nothing remotely marriageworthy, although their guy that does Harleys is a Kiwi (!) so I had a bit of a nag with him, but he's going home soon ...
Anyway its so sunny I am tempted to go straight back out for a ride.
The old unworthy stator (which was returned to me) was all black and grim-looking, the mechanic says its *supposed* to be a sort of goldish colour. At least now I know what one looks like
What do you guys do with old parts when you get given them back by the garage? ____________________ Not nearly as interesting in real life. |
