If you want to see *really* bad latency, try a geostationary satellite provider. I used one for a couple of years when I first ditched BT and the latency on that was approx 500mS Laughing

*And* I ran a VoIP phone on it which caused no end of confusion to people who didn't know about the delay... Laughing

I've had it for work, gaming, everything in between.

Had one outage that was part of the 13 minute worldwide outage on Starlinks end. The rest have been momentary blips, max 10 seconds.

Usual day to day ms is 20-30, loaded is a different story. Looking high 80s to low 110s.
Large downloads, even if capping the speeds via software results in super choppy video if on teams, however doesn't affect netflix likely due to the buffering in place.

Get around 200-250Mbps day time 8-5, after 5 a degree of capping is in place, or after 25GB of data, get chopped to ~100-150 tops.

Upload is 20-30, seen 50 a few times.

My sat is south facing, drawing 89-91W of juice constantly. It did however overheat last summer during that massive heatwave that took out some datacentres but I just threw a hose pipe on it, didn't change the power draw though.

Yeah the ethernet adapter is like £35 and useful if you want to use your own kit, I've got it so I can split bandwidth internally and VPN some shit to the US for TV purposes. There is no IWF filtering on Starlink so if you intend to allow children access, a basic filter should be on the menu at least.

Other than the odd slowdown, random 'obstruction' and drain on the grid, it's kept me more than alive. My 10Mbps ADSL is there in reserve.

I paid £99 for the dish and it works out £75 a month. It's costly hence if you can get fibre of any kind, even if it's multiple 70+ Mbps fttc/VDSL, do that. I cannot and the cost to install fibre would be 14 years of Starlink.

If you want to know anything specific, let me know. Everything was pain free but did have to buy wall mount and ethernet adapter but is what it is. The app is fairly shite also, and is non usable with your own router.

Back in the day our office tried the two-way sat malarkey - the dish was very odd looking compared to the then ubiquitous Sky dishes. It was all new in those days so we had no idea the latency would be so bad. We were in the process of bonding the (already bonded) 128k ISDN for uploads and sat for downloads when the provider went tits up much to the amusement of our accountant as we hadn't actually paid for the dish + install. Of course the administrators came along asking for I think it was ~£1,500 and the accountant was like "do you know how to whistle?"

In the end he successfully argued it never actually worked as advertised and suggested the administrators were free to pick up their kit at any time. That was over 20 years ago and you can still see the dish on Google Map's satellite photos Smile

I had an ISDN2E many years ago and at the time of 56k dialup and dubious reliability it was a revelation especially with channel bonding Smile

To be fair the satellite system I had was very reliable and a lot faster than the 512kb/s broadband BT delivered. Expensive though and strictly bandwidth controlled. It got me out of a hole for a couple of years until mobile services improved enough to be usable.

The power consumption Paddy mentioned is interesting to me.

If it draws 90w, that's ~2.2kwh per day. On the new energy cap that's 59p per day, ~£18 per month.

The starlink dish is almost half the base load of my house.

The newer standard setup ( rectangular dish and router) uses 50-75W - when the system is in use (and possibly the highest when the dish is self adjusting). Idle, it uses 20W.

It sounds like Paddy may have the older round dish system which uses 65-100W (around 40-60W idle), plus the round dish uses 230V and draws up to 5A in it's own right.

Sorry should explain more. The power lead that powers the Starlink, my firewall and my router in total is ~90w

I have the rectangle dish.

I will plug it solo when I get some downtime and see what it does solo, but electricity doesn't bother me too much, its my highest bill Laughing

Ah that'll be the same setup as mine will be once I get it mounted and configured then. I wasn't including additional infrastructure in my figures. Thumbs Up

This talk of power usage has got me thinking more generally. I've ordered a power usage monitor from FleaBay to see what usage my VM modem + ASUS WiFi router consumes.

Probably not a lot. I have a semi enterprise set up and they do be making noise at the expense of electricity Laughing

Worth having a monitor though, I have a Sonoff S31, firmware changed/flashed to use Tasmota which I pull off and graph for me to charge the bill to work, they want a remote host here, they pay for the remote host Laughing

Nah, I only get to charge the flat rate HMRC allows for "forced" working from home. This is more to head off any arguments from the wife about whether money's wasted with my PC being on versus overfilling the kettle.

Laughing Laughing

I pay the bills, I use the resources. That way they cannot moan Razz

If it wasn't work hosted stuff, I'd be running just the one little router anyway but they are handy little plugs if you like gathering info. I have graphing for uptime, resources, bandwidth and proper IPSLA rather than Musks assumed RTT. Just a bit of fun really... and yes my definition of fun seems rather dull!

Like I say though, great bit of kit if fibre or at least 50Mb+ wired net is not available. Waste of money otherwise (unless roaming too, that is a good benefit) - I don't have the business hi perf stuff, just generic end user residential and see the slow downs often enough to know it is there. I have no need for a dedicated IP so the business plan is not useful and I don't need priority data.

This is right now, which is just after the 'slowdown' which happens around 16:30 / 17:30 depending on the timezone.

Isn't Khan charging you £12.50 a day because you don't have fresh air? Smile

No, the £12.50 magically changes a 2003 diesel car without a DPF into a silent, fume free Tesla. A true wonder of science.

Had a few quid left on my Amazon gift card balance so I put it towards a Gamesir G7 SE Xbox controller. The USP: hall-effect joysticks (instead of potentiometers) which should mean no wear and no drift.

He might be charging other people but he's not charging me.
Despite the traffic, the air certainly seems fresher on Dovehouse Green than it does in my pokey little office around the corner Laughing

Be interested to hear your experiences with it, once it's up and running.

I've just finished the installation, powered it up and connected my phone to it - it's not on my main network at the moment.

While it's still calibrating itself I ran a quick speed check and I'm getting about 200Mbps down and 9.1Mbps up with a latency of 31ms.

It's simple enough to install although the antenna comes with the cable attached and they don't tell you you need to removed that end unless you want a really big hole in your wall/window frame or wherever. It's obvious if you use a bit of common sense though.

Now to tell EE to ram their ever deteriorating service where the sun don't shine... Laughing

Today I ordered a Husqvarna OBD2 adapter nope, that's the wrong connector Thinking Ah! A special new Husqvarna red connector... and it's over twice the price?!

Turns out I missed a meeting and now Euro5 bikes all have a standardised connector so there is no specific Husqvarna one anymore. Generic Euro5 OBD2 adapter? Ten quid Rolling Eyes

Winglets. A set of winglets. A pyramid plastics effort. The aim is to try and conceal my steering damper and
make the front end look a little more finished. Hopefully they'll arrive while the weathers still good. They also
do a fly screen which I quite like which is colour matched rather than the tinted polycarbonate effort from factory
but £165 odd quid is pushing it. It's very slightly more upswept than the oem one so may redirect a little bit of the
wind blast. Maybe for Christmas or if I find a discount code that works.

A few months ago I went thru a whole pile of paperwork from years back and I decided to bin the lot ... anything before 2017 (6 years, taxman's rules) got put in a big shopping bag - but I didn't get round to getting rid of it. The bag just sat under my windowsill gathering dust.

Last week I bit the bullet and took a hefty handful of it into work to put in the confidential waste bin, which gets emptied and shredded regularly.

But I think that my cat Dennis has been sitting on top of the papers as the whole lot stunk of cats - and now so does my handbag.

I wouldn't mind but I bumped into the (rather dishy) Director of Private Patients in the photocopying room and I reeked, fucking cat Brick Wall

So now I've gone and bought one of those roller-things that blacks out your details, so people can't steal your identity by going through your rubbish.

Then I bought a cross-cut shredder as well Rolling Eyes

Fuck it.

Odd, Willow doesn't smell of anything really. He's an outdoor cat - came in with grubby paws earlier - so we have no litter tray. His food goes off in this heat pretty quickly but the lad himself is whiff free Thinking

As to shredding etc. I take a damp scouring pad to the thermal printed labels on Amazon packaging before it goes in the recycling.
