How long do you let your bike warm up before a ride?

About 2/3minutes most of the time.

Unless i'm going out really early in the morning and don't wanna wake up the whole neighbourhood. In which case i'll start it up and ride real slow for the first couple of miles.

I never tan the arse of a bike until i've done atleast 10miles.

Get the bike out of the garage, start her up, and then proceed to put on all my kit.
By the time you have done that, she is good to go.

I tend to give the bike the time it takes for me to wheel it out the garage, put on my helmet and gloves and shut the door to warm up.

When I'm out and about it tends to get less time.

If I'm using it as a mode of transport (not a plaything) I tend to find I needn't go above about 4/5k revs until I hit motorways/dual carridgeways (which'll take another few minutes from whereever I usually set off from!)

3 Bars on the temp gauge then I'm off like a loon! Well not quite, I've spun cold tyres before on more than one occasion so I let the bike heat up then spend about 10 mins slow riding getting tyres and every other bit up to speed, including my brain. Laughing

I'm running my new bike in so it's a case of not letting it warm up much at all and keeping it to low revs. Smile

I like to leave it to warm up a minute or so. If I don't have time then same as JonB, keep revs low (less than 3500rpm), don't push it for a while.

I don't bother, it'll be a few minutes til I'm out of the garage and the 30 and 40mph zones.

nope, mine doesn't. Dont think the bigger bikes(and non 2 stroke) really need them. Mine does have a temp guage though. I believe that one of the expensive BMW cars has red lights around the rev counter which effectively changes the red line point while the car is cold. Maybe a good idea for the biking world?

Yet another superfluous feature that can go wrong and add to the expense of buying a bike? No thanks. I'll stick to having a modicum of mechanical sympathy for what I ride/drive, and decide for myself.

I leave it until it will run off choke, then from there just take it easy until its up to temperature.

It's daft to thrash it straight away anyway, remember that its not just the engine that needs to warm up. Thumbs Up

Fair enough, I never claimed to want it myself, just a thought for those who are less aware of what should be done. (I put a ? at the end of the sentance Smile )

Having sat about in a BMW dealer for a couple of hours this morning and had a proper look at their entire range, I can say that they're the most highly idiosyncratic, complicated, weird, and just plain ugly bikes that you can get for the most part. Some are just very well engineered and built, but some go way way over the top with complexity and fanciness. Very few BMW's are actually attractive imo, almost none of them look even remotely simple.

Warm up - my bike refuses to run for longer than about a half minute on choke when cold without throttle. Hence it doesn't really get very warm, I just take it easy for the first mile or two, upshifting at low rpm and not running the engine too fast.

Get it out, start it up and put kit on whilst revving it a bit (Don't like to leave 2t's ticking over, fouls the plug up loads) By this time it's at about 40 degrees, then i keep it under 6k rpm until about 60 degrees, then it's ready to go. Thumbs Up

I usually start it up then hold the revs at about 12k~14k for a min, warms up pretty quick. Smile

I just leave it for as long as it takes to get my lid and gloves on. Then take it easy until it's up to temp. Mind you I leave for work at 5.30am so the neighbours would be forming a lynch mob if I left it too long!

I seem to recall reading something recently (MCN maybe, or BIKE) saying that you shouldn't leave a bike idling for more than about a minute, as the oil doesn't circulate properly. I'll try and find the article.

I live next to a set of traffic lights, so warm up my bike for a few minutes before riding it, then when the lights turn red I pull out of my driveway and stop at the lights for a minute or two to let the bike warm up further.

I finally found a decent use for a red traffic light Thumbs Up

a sports 400 takes about 3-4 minutes to warm up before you can blip the throttle without it stalling and ride away

nearly the same as a 2t 125 but without the clouds of 2t oil and unburnt petrol pissing out of the exhaust

My routine:

Get most of my gear on, wheel the bike out of the garage, go back in the house and get my jacket, lid and gloves.

Back out to the bike, alarm off, ignition on, start the engine - 99% of the time no choke required.

Get my jacket on, helmet on and fastened, gloves on, check my bum-bag is fastened (my spare visor/wallet/spare earplugs/camera/mini road atlas/kitchen sink are kept in there and I wouldn't want to set off with it unzipped Shocked Very Happy )

Hop on bike and ride off - engine temp is normally around the 30-40-celsius mark by then, and I don't really rev it over halfway until it gets above 50 or so ...

Smile

Tony532: Your confusing your 400 with all 400's, I used to start mine, half choke right away then 30secs later no choke and it'll be fine.

I normally start it, Get my gloves/helmet etc on then ride away. Dont give it any real beans until it's upto 3 bars.

don't know what kind of 400 you have. Confused Mine runs from cold and doesn't stall unless I try to ride off when I literally JUST started it.
