Ahhh! so now we know
and the prize goes to Cresad
what did we learn?
Take the rotor off to check the cam chain is properly engaged
on the crank sprocket |
I did try that.. but I coudlent get it off!
Anway, Getting that chain on was a nightmare. Got it on after about and hour of messing with it.
Engine is running now. All be it with a bit of a rattle in the top end now. Re-Checked valve clearances and those are fine so not sure what this rattle is. Maybe it just didnt like being dismantled!
Will keep any ear on it. Its a short 3 mile ride to work so will take it slow and steady and see how it goes. |
Previously you told us it was making a noise which prompted the initial dismantle - different now?
In between times you mentioned you tried the engine on teh starter with the cam chain off the bottom sprocket ..did you compression test after is was re-assamebled - a slightly bent valve will still run..
..for a while. ____________________ Now: A100, GT250A, XJ598, FZ750

That engine probably has a pair of nylon cam chain guides. Maybe one of them has become damaged or loose. |

knowing what we know now, and re-reading your initial post, it would be interesting to try work out how the cam chain came to be off the sprocket. Like...did you remove and refit the tensioner which the rocker cover was on? No blame, just trying to work out how it came to be that the thing came off the bottom sprocket but you mention the cam chain is nice and tight in your original post seems to imply the tensioner was also fettled at that point. ____________________ Gone: Yamaha DT50lc, Suzuki DR500, Suzuki A100, Kawasaki z250ltd, RD350YPVS, Suzuki DR Big, Kawasaki AR125, Kawasaki KMX200, Suzuki GS1000S, Katana 1100, GS550M, Suzuki RGV250

Here is a video showing the sound its making.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4YlcPOMjVO4
I have rechecked the cam chain tension today as well as re-doing the valve clearances.
Still noisy. The bike runs perfect apart from being very tippy tappy.
Cam chain guides are in place and fine also. Had a good look at them when the engine was apart.
The sound is 100% coming from the top of the engine. |
