Smile 2

5/10

Much like the first one with a bit more gore.

*Spoiler* About half the film didnt actually happen.

Suppose they thought that was clever. We thought it was pointless.

The Batman (2022)

Much is made of Joker's "incel" qualities but Pattison's more traditional dark detective portrayal of the Gotham Knight chimes with the dictionary definition of the word.

The world is not as clear-cut right and wrong as one would hope and The Batman leans into this with reasonably good cinematography and a thorough but somewhat plodding plot.

Oh, and notable motorbike spotting opportunities Wink

Heretic (6/10)
Took myself off to the actual cinema to watch this, third row from the front Laughing
I'm going back to the joy of becoming immersed in the big-screen cinematic experience.

But I mainly only went to be entertained from the POV of Hugh Grant being a not-very-nice man for a change.
He does it surprisingly well, actually.
And the aviator style spectacles help, by making him look a bit like wife-killer Robert Wagner.

I liked Hugh Grant when he was a scumbag in The Gentlemen, although he was still noticeably a bit too likeable-rogue in that role, a bit Arthur Daley I thought.

He attempted to be a bit more "evil cretin" in this one. The religious bickering was an annoying but necessary part of the plot device as he was picking on two Mormon missionary girls.

But the plot of Heretic was fairly tired. A little bit of tension built up from the start as his victims missed his not very subtle warning that they can't use their phones in his house or the "Of course I shall just go and get my wife as a chaperone" - it was all a bit obvious: I was literally going "come on girls, she's not going to come out" - but they were teenagers and Mormons so one assumes they were supposed to be green enough to fall for it. A rather tired old horror trick of wrinkled-woman-in-veil-including-blood did herself no favours either. The only tension was really whether their supervising elder was going to find them in time.

It came to a head when he was snuggling up to one of them and I wasn't sure if he was going to die on her, or bite her throat out which was about as tense as it got.

Might drop that down to 5/10 or even 4.
Sorry, Hugh Laughing Must try harder.

I watched this as the weekend after seeing the spin-off 'Pengin' series was showing on Sky Atlantic (after watching the first episode, i realised i needed to watch the film first, as it picks up the story after the 'incident')

Really enjoyed it, but what i really love about all the Batman movies, is the producers/writers always seem to make the latest version even darker than the previous itteration....... barring in mind, i grew up watching the original Adam West Batman

Fahrenheit 451 2018.

I thought it was alright, but it's a story of a specific time and whilst burning books is one thing, burning servers of books? Michael Shannon was great though I thought.

I much prefered the original '66 film.

I'm about to watch the last episode. You dont really need anything story-wise from the film.

House of Gucci (6/10)

Really very interesting. I did not know anything about Mrs Gucci-the-gold-digger having her-husband-the-heir to a fortune knocked off and it was fascinating. I only watched it because it had Al Pacino in it, and he was impressively revolting Laughing Excellent cameo from Jeremy Irons, and Salma Hayek was typically gorgeous.

So I now have a crush on Adam Driver, and am yet again impressed at Gaga. She really didn't need all that early "crazy outfits" history, due to her singing and almost passable acting skills. Although I understand she was heavily influenced by Freddie Mercury, so not surprising really that she decided to go down the outrageous path to get her fame.

Definitely a chick film, though Laughing

the Witch
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4263482/

had trouble understanding quite a bit of the dialogue unfortunately.
it seemed to try staying authentic to the 17th century period it was set in.
5/10 for me. wouldnt want to watch it again.

id did manage to scare the life out of the wench after we had watched it though, by jumping out on her when she thought i had gone to bed Mr. Green

The Pink Panther 7/10
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0057413/

Peter Sellers is so funny that i still laugh out loud at the PP movies.
and the actresses were such natural beauties back then. something that seems to be missing in modern cinema.

Black Adam (2022)

I quite liked the original Shazam! but the sequel was absolutely awful. Sadly it seems The Rock hired the writers from the latter. The dialogue and plot wouldn't trouble a 7 year old yet the tone is dark and violent. Who was this movie aimed at? Also let down by the disjointed editing.

Now we'll never know whether he could beat Superman Sad

Yeah I've never managed to see it either. I tried to watch it once but it was a long time ago in my stoner days, so I think I was probably stoned and fell asleep. Attempted it again but still couldn't get into it.

Might try again at some point.

True.
But I did like the voice of the beastie when yer man first showed up at his castle. All that Darth Vadery heavy breathing and sloooowwww gravelly voice thing was terribly atmospheric. Wub

It made up for all the bratty Romanians sitting in the seats around me that were doing their best to be obnoxious teenagers. Serves me right for going on a Saturday night, I suppose Laughing

Not sure why but Willem Dafoe (who I usually find rather dishy) reminded me of Nobby Laughing ... but without the hardware Laughing

Reminds me of when I saw the 2nd Lord of the Rings film with the wife. In one particular battle scene there was a blood curdling cry. "Jeez, this surround sound is good!" Turns out a lad 3 rows back had had a little too much to drink which wouldn't have been too bad but for the errr... outflow... making the bottoms of my trainers sticky as it dribbled screenwards.

Back In action 3/10

Not great Netflix funded "Action comedy" with Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx. Quite rude about the British in general, and they could have had Dame Helen Mirren or Dame Judi Dench as the mother character, but they got Glenn Close instead, who is not English.

Who puts mash on a full English breakfast?

Some good fights, but some absolutely dire 'spy' work from Diaz and Foxx.

Funniest part? The absolutely empty arrow straight country roads right outside Heathrow airport.

I watched a few films over the past few weeks.

A Real Pain 2025
Jesse Eisenberg plays Jesse Eisenberg.
A solid 7/10. A buddy comedy with a depressing overtone.

Dredd 2012
A classic I recommend to anyone who likes good cinema. 9/10

25th Hour 2002
Comes highly praised by IMDB but overrated. It was a weak story that didn't go anywhere. Good acting as expected by Ed Norton but 4/10.

Dead Mans Shoes 2004
A classic British revenge film. 8/10. I would love to see a version with a slightly bigger budget but its still great.

Blue Ruin 2013
I wanted another revenge film after DMS and found this American version. I really like these lower budget crime/revenge films. 8/10.

Come and See 1985
Always good to remind oneself about the horrors of actual war. Fantastic piece of soviet cinema and incredible child acting. 8/10

Cool Hand Luke 1967
One of those films that you can tell was ground breaking/different to almost everything else at the time. Holds up reasonably well. 7/10

Gone Girl 2014
Rosamund Pike is just great in everything she does. Casting is perfect for this film and in my top 25 films of all time. 9.5/10

Idiocracy 2006
A documentary about the 2020's - Mike Judge doesn't miss with social commentary. 9/10

The Lighthouse 2019
My introduction to Robert Eggers a few years ago and did a re-watch before Nosferatu. He is a master who uses every shot to its maximum. Willem Dafoe is always good value. 8.5/10

Nosferatu 2025
As above, Eggers does not waste a shot. This was basically cinema-porn and Lily Rose Depp smashed it. The call backs to the original film but also taking its own bold steps in its representation of Nosferatu himself make this my favourite film of 2025 so far. 9/10

Riders of Justice 2020
Mads Mikkelsen leads a vigilante group. What more could you ask for? 9/10.

The Rock 1996
I am doing a bit of a Nicolas Cage rerun and this is in his top 5. Sean Connery and Cage in a completely over the top, ridiculous story. 8/10.

Rounders 1998
The only poker film that captures the essence of cash game poker. In the poker game of life, women are the rake. 8.5/10

Snake Eyes 1998
Not as good as I remembered. Nic Cage is unhinged but in a weird way 7/10.

Dying of the Light 2014
Ultimate nu-cage film. Low budget, Nic Cage completely committing to a role (as always). 9/10. The high rating is not for acting, cinematography, script or story, but the overall package is just peak Cage.

Was Much blander than that. It was plain mash. She then called black pudding 'blood pudding' too which annoyed me.

It's lazy. How hard would it have been to waft the script under the nose of anyone from the UK? Like reading Chinglish instructions, "Dear Happy Customer, many wishes for you to enjoy our products!"

It was set in the UK and I assume some of it was filmed there? There was a country manor part that DID seem to be in the UK,(with a UK registered helicopter landing) but the petrol station slash diner they went into to get breakfast looked VERY American. I suppose it *could* have been a bad Little Chef knock off, but it's set in present day and the Miniature cookery expert has not existed for quite a number of years. The actor playing the lady serving seemed to be English. It's really very odd.

It's when Glenn Close says to her grandchildren "I'm British darling, we don't hug!" which is very much not true too. She also offered her 14 year old Granddaughter a gin, and it was explained away by one of the Americans as being a 'European' thing... which you sort of get if it was wine and it was set in France, but it's the classic 'American thinking all of Europe is the same' thing. Very odd.
