 |
|
I have this fancy ceiling light, 10x 12V 3W Halogen G4 pin bulbs. It's literally the last light in the house that isn't energy efficient LEDs. I ordered a set of 12/24V AC/DC LED G4 bulbs of approximately the same light output and they sorta work...
All LEDs: turn on, LEDs come on for a fraction of a second and cut out. Note: not a fuse or general RCD condition on the consumer unit.
Replace one LED with an old halogen: all lights come on.
Seems to me like a safety feature in the transformer. The load is different with all LEDs and so it cuts out "nope, I suspect a short". The question is: is it safe to leave it with one halogen, should I try a different transformer or maybe add a dummy load resistor? (~same resistance as a halogen bulb)
<addendum> halogens start out at ~0ohms and quickly warm up to ~3ohms so if the transformer is "smart" it's allowing a momentary short while the bulbs warm up. Hence why the LEDs come on for a moment. ____________________ Royal Enfield Continental GT 535, Husqvarna Vitpilen 401, Yamaha XSR700, Honda Rebel, Yamaha DT175, Suzuki SV650 (loan) Fazer 600, Keeway Superlight 125, 50cc turd scooter |

I'm going to give swapping the transformer a go as apparently having one of the ten bulbs left as halogen "looks stupid" according to the wife ____________________ Royal Enfield Continental GT 535, Husqvarna Vitpilen 401, Yamaha XSR700, Honda Rebel, Yamaha DT175, Suzuki SV650 (loan) Fazer 600, Keeway Superlight 125, 50cc turd scooter |

Still got these throughout my house (bar the toilet for immediate brightness (standard 100w incandescent there). 10 years later and none of them have blown despite being installed 'upside down'.

You really need to ditch those now... times have moved on since the original LEDs came out; modern ones are much cheaper, very reliable, bright, come on instantly like an incandescent, and use only about 10-20% of the electricity of those fluorescent abberations...

I still use a variery of CRT's so consumption isn't an issue for me. I have boxes full of new incandescent bulbs ready to install whenever they're needed.
But importantly: In the bedroom in winter mornings I don't want full brightness light in my face. Plus my patented flailing around technique to dress my upper half has blown two bulbs in the past few years - the CFL is reasonably robust in the regard of being knocked. ____________________ CBT: 12/06/10, Theory: 22/09/10, Module 1: 09/11/10, Module 2: 19/01/11

One of the best things I ever did was dump the tube in the kitchen for an LED strip light. Not only energy saving but safer: instant daylight in the room of sharp implements ____________________ Royal Enfield Continental GT 535, Husqvarna Vitpilen 401, Yamaha XSR700, Honda Rebel, Yamaha DT175, Suzuki SV650 (loan) Fazer 600, Keeway Superlight 125, 50cc turd scooter |

Fitted a new transformer. Worked marginally better... now the lights come on and only flicker occasionally Fuck this, just going to get a new LED ceiling light. ____________________ Royal Enfield Continental GT 535, Husqvarna Vitpilen 401, Yamaha XSR700, Honda Rebel, Yamaha DT175, Suzuki SV650 (loan) Fazer 600, Keeway Superlight 125, 50cc turd scooter |
